Who's on Flickr: the ultimate list

Sounds fantastic, I'm off to browse...

I hope you like what you see - it's the one group I always go to first when I log on.

It might be daunting at first - they have thousands of members - but ultimately can be very rewarding :)

The first thread I read was someone anxious about doing a family portrait:
http://flickr.com/groups/utata/discuss/72157594457157909/

It's full of wonderful ideas on how to get people to relax and sit closer together. Just in the 2 minutes I spent reading it I already feel I've picked up tips that'll directly help my photography.

I'm looking forward to reading/seeing the Thursday walks and the Iron Photographer themes...

Think you've just made my Flickr a whole lot more interesting, so much for going to bed early tonight. Tomorrow's Friday, I can cope being tired!

I'm pleased you like it :) There are a lot of really experienced photographers there who are only too happy to share their wealth of knowledge and experiences, and I always feel I can ask a question without being made to feel like a fool!

However, there is something not really working in terms of community on Flickr. Perhaps it's an issue of scale, or I haven't found the right groups, but there's hardly any real discussions happening. I have seen some wonderful photos and traded a few PMs but it's a tricky place to (virtually) get to know people.

It takes a little longer nowadays as it's so huge. When I joined 2 years ago there weren't as many of us. After time, however, you should find that you 'get to know' those who post to similar groups, or who have similar tastes/styles of photography.

All I can suggest is that you keep commenting on people's work and keep posting to group discussions. Follow your contacts' photostreams regularly. There are plenty of friendly folk out there.

Would certainly recommend Utata but you have to visit every day to keep up with the many discussions going on.

It always takes time with new groups/sites (I'm finding that here) but give it time.

Agree, it does take a while to find your way around...it is huge. Some groups regretably are dumping grounds for images with little meaningful comment and no discussion. However, there are some groups where moderation not only ensures a reasonable standard of images (yes they delete the ones that don't meet the criteria!) but where there is also a healthy level of discussion.

Getting a nice old bunch of peeps on the Urban group in flickr now. Must branch out with new threads ... surely one of our more experienced photographers can start off an intellectual discussion on some finer point of the art?

This is my flickr page, some of the black and white ones were taken my brother. The b/w set was taken just to try out my new camera really. Most of my travelling ones are stills from the video I took and the rest were taken by my friend with his camera.

Do we prefer having discussions in a smallish forum in a medium-sized crowd (very loosely connected by music, politics, London or drugs) or an in absolutely miniscule forum in an enormous crowd just connected by photography?

I like it here :D

mememememe

warning: I use flickr as a backup site, so there's lots of photos in there (even though only about 1/2 of them are public!)

a few urbanite events there...

Cheers, been trying to get out and take more pictures but the weathers been awful so a bit restricted at the moment.

I'm having a lot of fun with the Iron Photographer series at Utata. It's a themed 'competition' -- though has no winners, you just have to take a new photo that has three required elements.

Here are the two I've entered:

Iron Photographer 13

1 - in the bathroom
2 - an object not normally seen in the bathroom
3 - square format

Iron Photographer 14:
1 - Something light can pass through
2 - The color green
3 - Lighted by a flashlight
