Who will be the new Labour candidate for Streatham?

Reckon there'll be a final 5. Chuka Umunna, Steve Reed, Dave Malley, Cathy Ashley and Dora Dixon-Fyle (in no particular order!)

The SLP reckons that Naz Sarkar - who is a councillor in Walthamstow, but works as a teacher in Streatham -has made it onto the final shortlist of five in place of Dave Malley.

According to LabourHome Chuka has won:

Chuka Umunna, employment lawyer, CLP vice-chair and editor of TMP has this afternoon been selected by Streatham members as the candidate in the next General Election, taking over from the retiring Keith Hill MP.

Result in full. First ballot:

Cathy Ashley 60
Dora Dixon-Fyle 7
Steve Reed 143
Naz Sarkar 3
Chuka Umunna 125

Transfers from Cathy, Dora and Naz went 19 to Steve and 50 to Chuka.

Final result
Steve Reed 162
Chuka Umunna 175

Keith Hill described Chuka as a charismatic 21st century candidate.

Poor Steve Reed.
He should have spent more time schmoozing his own party members rather than waste energy convincing the entire population of lambeth who were not eligible to vote in this contest.

Anyway, looks like I'll be voting Liberal Democrat whenever they call this election.
I hate the way Labour feels that they own all of Lambeth.

I'm not sure they feel they own it? They used to, which is why they were so thrown when the LibDems/tories got in. But I got the feeling they thought they really needed to prove themselves at the last election/beyond.

Shuffling the deckchairs on board the Titanic???

Can someone explain why, now that Steve Reed has failed to be selected as PPC for Streatham, the Labour Group on the Council appears to have decided to change the responsibilities of every member of the "Cabinet" apart from the leader, deputy leader and finance person

Leader:
Councillor Steve Reed

Deputy Leader
Councillor Jackie Meldrum

Safer Communities:
Councillor Donatus Anyanwu [was Councillor Mark Bennett]

Housing and Regeneration:
Councillor Lib Peck [Housing side was Councillor John Kazantzis]

Employment and Enterprise:
Councillor John Kazantzis [Paul McGlone was Regeneration and Enterprise]

Environment:
Councillor Sally Prentice [part of Councillor Lib Peck's former Environment & Culture role]

Children and Young People:
Councillor Paul McGlone [formerly Councillor Sally Prentice]

Culture, Leisure and Sport:
Councillor Mark Bennett [was part of Councillor Lib Peck's former role]

Health and Care Services:
Councillor Lorna Campbell [apparently a new full Cabinet post]

Finance and Resources:
Councillor Jim Dickson

The four remaining "deputy" Cabinet members (after Lorna's promotion) all seemed to have changed roles as well:
Community Cohesion:
Councillor Rachel Heywood

Housing and Neighbourhoods:
Councillor Kirsty McHugh

Young People:
Councillor Florence Nosegbe

Sustainability:
Councillor Nigel Haselden

I reckon the decision was made before the candidate selection. However, it has to be ratified by full council, which happened to be after the selection. Guess it's a mid-term reshuffle

Theres nothing fishy about it - like at Westminster they have a reshuffle every so often.

I guess its to keep the Cabinet members on their toes and make sure the council departments are fit for purpose (to use a cliche) - according to my sources its been planned for a while and has had liittle to do with the Streatham selection (although had Reed been selected he may have planned to stand down as leader before too long).

Apparently the new housing and regeneration portfolio is to do with housing being more strategic in anticipation of the ALMO rather than concerning itself with the day to day management.

Apparently Lorna Campbell is the first black woman in the Lambeth cabinet in 20 years or so (or however long since Linda Bellos stepped down)

Urban75 is quoted in the comments here.

Thats nice of them:).Been reading some of this thread and cant help thinking that Labour party members live in this closed world of in fighting. To someone on the outside of this its all outside of how I see life in this country and what is happening to it.

Looked at above link to Lukes blog -at one point he is going on about "lobotomised Guardian readers" who will make the party unelectable.

Sounds very much like the mentality of Jacqui Smith who was quoted by Toynbee as saying that this was basically a "conservative" country ,that crime and immigration were the things that concerned people most and that she would ignore "Guardian" reader types.

I know LR has said the Labour party doesnt want to be in the wilderness again. But whats the point of voting at the moment?

Got bored when PT was going on about transferable votes etc but the rest is spot on.
