Who were the best band of the 1960s?

For me it's the Stones, all the way from one of their earliest, and imo best- Come On- through to the death of Brian Jones. After that they turned into a stadium band and I lost interest.

The case for Third World War is gaining steam:

Of all people like Iggy Pop and Roky Erickson who were revived by punk, one great gaping hole remains: whatever happened to Third World War? They were a '70s band from England who had much more of a raw garage-y tone than most bands of their day – as powerful as the Pink Fairies. What set them apart was their political angle: as left-wing, Communist working-class brawlers. They put out two albums on major labels, and how did they get away with this – their first album had lyrics like "Waiting on the rooftops, looking for a sign / Pull your hand-grenade pin, I'll pull mine / Power to the people, when we rise / Power to the poor, when we rise… There's people out of work here / There could be a riot here / Very soon, you know, there could be a riot everywhere." On their second album, the song "Hammersmith Guerrilla" goes: "I've got just the thing for you, a real cop beater / A sawn-off twelve-gauge, five-shot repeater / Get your arse along down to Hammersmith town / Join the urban guerrillas, take up arms against the crown." Another song was titled "I'd Rather Cut Cane for Castro"! They were dead-set about armed struggle against the British monarchy: "Let's free the working class / We're tired of licking the government's ass," etc. I wonder if they're in jail now. The graphic style on the sleeves has early Stiff Little Fingers written all over it – but five years before punk! -jello

Dunno, I still listen to Beefheart, The Monks, The Sonics and The Stooges fairly regularly. Fuck the fucking Beatles but if it wasn't for them we wouldn't have had Los Shakers and their fantastic Break It All tune.

Did the Delvetts do much else apart from Last Time Around?

I like pub-rock. I had Down by the Jetty as my tag for years.

when I lived in Turnpike House the guy who lived in the flat next door was the singer in The Inmates:

even tho he must have been in his late 50s he still had that 70s pub rock look; denim shirt, leather waistcoat, winklepickers - always used to meet him drunk in the lift in the early hours of the morning and had some great chats about the late 70s scene. cool guy. :)

Not that I was of record buying age in the 60's :hmm: ....but as soon as I was, I raided the secondhand record stall in Rye Lane indoor market with my pocketmoney and back catalogued a lot....if I feel like summoning up the era to me I reckon I'd chuck on Butterfield Blues Band or Howling Wolf.

Peter Green era Fleetwood mac should get more of a shout in the 'one of the best' column.
And so should Creedance Clearwater Revival.

But overall its still The Who, The kinks and the Stones.

and the small faces.

and the Jimi Hendrix Experience.

fair dos then. Imagine if they had those lyrics on a High Tide LP in 66-67 instead of fucking flowers and shit. That would have been fantastic and we'd all be living in a better world :)

'I sing this song for it seems so wrong, why don't the GI love the Cong'.
