Who were the best band of the 1960s?

Decades are a fun and mostly valid way of classifying music, best means 'my favourite and I'm prepared to say why'. Easy.

So it's not 'who mwere the best' then but' who was you're favourite' from [insert decade]?! An entirely different question as one seeks some objective definite answer whilst the other is entiorely subjective.

In theory, yes. In practice, I can't imagine saying 'this band were the best but they're not my favourite'. Best is shorthand for favourite here, I reckon.

On reflection, maybe Booker T & the MGs. For their solo stuff, but even more for their work as the Stax records "house band."

As wikipedia tells us: -

They played on and produced hundreds of records, including classics like Walking the Dog, Hold On (I'm Comin') (on which the multi-instrumentalist Jones played tuba over Donald "Duck" Dunn's bass line), Soul Man, Who's Making Love, I've Been Loving You Too Long (To Stop Now), and Try a Little Tenderness, among others.

If the button can have the Stooges, I'll say Can (although they did loads of great stuff in the 70s too).

Thing is, if you can have Can then Led Zeppelin are also admissible ...

While I admire both greatly, I'd tend to think of them as 70's bands 'cos that's when they did most of their classic stuff (although in both cases and in that of Capt Beefheart also, arguably their very best stuff was all late 60's)

by that criteria, and it's a fair one, i'd go with The Skatalites - great in their own right and also the backing band for literally scores of classica

but unlike The MGs or The Skatalites, they weren't known for their own stuff, they were purely a session band.

They're a band, the bulk of their recording career was in the 60s, so fuck it, I'm sticking with them. They did better stuff than some of the hippy shit suggested so far :p

Booker T & the MG's solo stuff gets really grating after a whole album. A few tracks are great, but I find I wish they'd just turn that fucking organ off for a few tunes about half way through one side.

'Best band of the 60s' is a difficult concept but my Desert Island 60s top 10 would be:

Big Brother and the Holding Company
Can
Pink Floyd
The Skatalites
Sound Dimension
Julie Driscoll, Brian Auger and the Trinity
Fleetwood Mac
Yardbirds
Booker T and the MGs
Soft Machine

Surely Cream are the worst band of the sixties? They're where it all went wrong. I blame them for the bilge that clogged up the early seventies.

I vote for the Beach Boys as best band. Rock'n'roll, surf, teenage symphonies to God, and "Good Vibrations". Their best was better than anyone else's.

....and not enough people have mentioned the Beatles

Agreed. I don't think there should be a doubt that they are number one. Had a career longer than most of the 60's bands, were hugely prolific, expanded their repertoire quickly, were innovative, set the benchmark and influence for many bands, and broke up before they got shit.

I just fear sometimes they come under the idea of familiarity breeds contempt schtick. How often do I listen to the Beatles thesedays??? Hardly ever, I've had my fix. But I still don't deny their greatness.

Remember in the space of less than 3 years they went from "I Want to Hold Your Hand" to "Tomorrow Never Knows". Pretty impressive if you look at it in that context.
