Who the **** told Cerys Matthews she could sing

I like Cerys' voice but thought Catatonia were an average indie band. Prefer her solo stuff.

As for technical ability when it comes to singing I don't think it really matters. Being able to convey emotion is the main thing. Nick Cave can't sing for toffee but conveys emotion really well.

That said, every time I hear that bloke from Embrace I have to reach for my ear plugs. :(

Another vote for the gorgeous Cerys, I'm afraid. I think she's got fire in her belly and I love her voice because it's precisely the opposite of run-of-the-mill trained warbly blandness that seems to dominate the charts currently.

I like her voice in the same way I like Janis Joplin's and Nina Simone's: it has nothing to do with vocal range and everything to do with confidence and passion.

Innit but let's be having less of the 'I'm afraid'.

The girl's got welsh soul

I would say it's impossible to be a 'great' singer if you're technically pants.
Great pop music isn't all about technical ability and if you believe that to be true you've missed out on some of the greatest albums ever made.

And that's your loss.

Blimey, I just don't like Cerys Mathews is all. I didn't start a thread saying 'Who likes Cerys Mathews' I asked who told he she could sing, cos she can't, we've established that now.

I love Cerys Matthews and i love her voice and i love the fact she is mad as a badger.

Then again i once had bjork on constant for two months once :)

Me too, but my Bjork thing goes back to 1988 and the Sugarcubes, and hasn't stopped yet. I have a dvd of the 'cubes and one of Bjork videos, plus I have her film Dancer in the Dark. I used to have a video of Bjork unplugged.

As for Cerys; I have Catatonia's International Velvet  Cerys' voice is the best thing about it. Her duet with Tom Jones was well good. Sexy for sureand she smiles a lot. :)

I go there sometimes in my dreams. I always tell Bjork to phone. I wait by the phone for Bjork to call, but the only one who calls me is the screaming thing. :(

No, I could never confuse Bjork with a modem or a fax or a tortured cat.

I always keep bananas in the house in case she calls round. :) She never calls round :(

Apparently, when Bjork was growing up in the commune she was allowed to eat as many bananas as she liked. Until she was sick. It was that kind of commune. Might have put her off bananas though

I remember all these important details from her interviews. :)

No, I mean she can't sing. She's off key, can't hold a note and will give herself nodules if she's not careful. I heard her on the radio the other night from Cambridge folk festival and she was abysmal. I had to tun the radio off.

What you mean is you like her and that's fine but she's shite :)

She once ate only bananas for three days.

She seems to like fruit. In 1988 she collected an award. She rushed on stage, jumped on the one presenting the award and said 'I'm. great. full. I'm. grape. fruit!'

I have her Gling Glo cd released only in Iceland (but orderable over the net). It is a collection of Icelandic folk songs performed to a jazz backdrop. Don't know what she's singing exactly because its in Icelandic but I know I agree with every word.

Last heard Cerys' fishwifesque tones on a CBeebies cartoon.

Bless her.

Fans of Bjork should definitely hunt down a copy of the Sugarcubes remix album.

http://www.cduniverse.com/productinfo.asp?pid=2110044&style=music&cart=374954495&BAB=E

Released prior to Nellee Hooper's work on Debut, it shows the depth of songwriting the Sugarcubes achieved as a best of all their tracks - and puts a fat bassline on them.

The limited edition (i.e. no chance) copy has twice as many mixes.

I might shove it on a torrent one day, then again, I might not...

Couldn't have put it better myself

Like Cerys, my dog is also Welsh and she's a bit of a nutter. But there the similarity ends because my dog sounds better, looks better and probably smells better too.
