I really like him. I'm turning into my mother, though, and I fear it's only the tip of the iceberg. I found myself saying "ooh, this is catchy" to most of the Scissor Sisters' stuff too. Evidence, if any were needed...

I'll go away now and leave you with your more modern popular beat combos...

Are you mad? syd barrett and prince are my favourite artists!

See, this is how I know I'm turning into my mother. Normally I'm a bit of a rock chick and I embrace more "challenging" music like you, and suddenly I'm dancing like a pissed granny round the kitchen to Mika. Hmmm... it's only a matter of time before doilies start making an appearance in the Poot household. Mika may only be the beginning...

Thing is I quite like the scissor sisters but thats WHY I dont like Mika. He's trying to be a slightly more straight Jake Shears but with no thought behind his work. Looks like he just went hmmm, those scissor sisters do awfully well. I'll throw something together and try some of that.

Have you actually heard the album or are you basing your opinion on what you've heard on the radio?

i apologize if i'm wrong but i thought he was classically trained. he seems to know his way around a piano as well.

he has the vocal range of an opera singer...just listen!

good pop music that isn't written by some faceless producer on cowell's payroll. quite refreshing, i think.

if people don't like it then don't listen to it.
Ah. You know them teenagers?

I think they may have had a point... ;)

Which is why he makes smart arse muso shite.

Just like most people who go to music college.

I hope this thread is about Mika Vainio otherwise I've just made a tit of myself with the way I voted

So in two days you have managed to:

a) Make a tit of yourself with a new username
b) make a tit of yourself here with the voting

tsk tsk :D :D ;)

Any backlash against something hugely hyped and popular quickly becomes as stale as the overexposed artist/product itself. Any sense of moderation goes out of the window and people cluster into a mob that delights in a shared sense of hatred which is completely blind to any sense of moderation or analytical thought.

Behind the hipster dogma I see a lot of reverse snobbery and thinly veiled homophobia in the attacks on Mika's music and the assumptions about his personality. I find it difficult to listen to more than a few Mika song in a row, it's like eating too much candy floss and not exactly my thing but he sure knows how to write a good tune and he references lots of queer 70's pop that I like. As a gay man I also appreciate that there finally are mainstream pop stars who write songs that are explicitly gay/queer. There are a few nice numbers on the album (Relax, Billy Brown) and some that I find irritating (Lollipop, Big Girls). As camp retro pop goes it's still better than the second Scissor Sisters album though.

Agreed. If ther comments were about Lily Allen there'd be loads of sanctimonious claptrap spewed forth on her behalf

oh behave, i loathed mika from the first time i heard him for the simple shrill sound of his records. If you can try and work that into some kind of homphobia, you're trying too hard.

how do you work that out?

i think mika sucks, i like the odd lily allen song. If you criticised Lily Allen, where do you suggest i would source this 'sanctimonious claptrap'

utter rubbish

See, I like Lollipop but maybe it's because my boys like it and we all sing it in the car :o We all love Billy Brown and I like Big girls but that's a bit of a no-brainer :D

I also really like the song at the end of the album with just him and a keyboard - the one that's really plaintive?

Yes, the last song is pretty. I can see how Mika would be ideal singalong material for kids. :D

nope lily allen is good. mika is a complete android vomit inducing cunt.

(although i like the pull tiger tail remix of his first single :o )

You might dislike Lilly Allen and Mika, but they're not in any way similar - in their style, in how they arrived in the industry, anything

Ok sire ;)

I just hate the whole manufactured pop thing.

But then I still stand by the fact that Oasis are the last influential UK band (on a grand scale, no-one has had THAT much impact since them ;))

:D

what, like The Supremes, The Ronettes, The Shangri-Las, The Monkees, The Miracles?

etc etc etc

also, much as i hate Mika, he's not some production line pop moppet, by any means. So you're wrong twice :p
