The influence of The Who on the Pistols is easy to underestimate. Lydon auditioned by mimicing to The Who. Some of the aggression and attitude - especially My Generation - is evident. The Pistols covered the Who too.

The punk explosion was heralded by the Sex Pistols. There were many precedents - from Gene Vincent through Ramones, but there was a uniqueness and a new movement sprung forth that was, well, new.

Weller was a major Townshend disciple as well - everything from the mod influences to the Rickenbacker.

And in those days, being influenced by someone didn't mean directly ripping them off or even passing their tracks off as your own, as it seems to now...
