Who should be the next England manager?

They also showed magnificent fighting spirit to win it, when they weren't the best side in the competition.

Incidentally, is there some reason why the answer is not "José Mourinho"?

cos he wouldn't take the job?

Trevor Brooking. Or, at the very least, he should be given the task of finding the next manager.

yeah. now we're talking.

When Brooking was manager of West Ham it was a very enjoyable, liberating experience (even though we went down) - proper attacking football, and Uncle Trev stood on the sidelines.

Unfortunately he said at the time that his wife would never allow him to be a football manager, so there is no way he would take the England job I'm afraid. :(

See, I genuinely think that's a shame - he seems to be rotting away at the FA, as some kind of Ambassador Without Portfolio yet he certainly knows more about the game than Barwick, who's again taken it upon himself to find the next manager. Who's going to take him seriously after the Scolari fandango? At least if Trev turned up he'd get some respect..

he's in charge of football development isn't he?

but yeah, he'd certainly do a better job of finding the next manager than barwick will.

It was refreshing to have a manager who obviously liked playing the game "the right way" and who preferred attacking football. He almost kept us up too..... :(

Alan Shearer.

As I said, hes angling for a role - dont be surprised to see him somewhere in the mix in a month or two. YOu may alos find Rob Lee dragged into the FA mix lower down the line at Shearers request

he wont get involved & move up until he knows its decent bet for success.

crafty fox is shearer

Yeah and get him to pick a team entirely from the Championship, who, arguably could do just as well or even better: e.g. Northern Ireland were on course to qualify before Healy et al got into the Premiership and then after beating Sapin and Sweden they lost to Latvia and Iceland.
It's the way forward!
....... so tonight's project should be "Pick an England side from the Championship that would be good enough to qualify for a major international tournament"

So let's start with the Goalkeeper - any suggestions anyone ?

What about someone from outside the higher echelons of club football? Yesterday was yet more evidence that English club football doesn't have the correlation to international performance that some put forth, with atrocious performances from Lampard and Gerrard in particular.

There are Englishmen with international experience. Venables won't get it for a number of reasons, but what about Bristol City's Gary Johnson (superb record of getting the best out of lesser-known players and ex-manager of Latvia) or Roy Hodgson (massive continental experience with Inter, amongst others, and internationals with Switzerland, UAE and Finland)? You can say that they haven't managed top players (Hodgson has), but look at the showing by our "top players" last night.

Why do people rate O'Neil as such a strong candidate? IMO he's a similar manager to Curbs - very very good at motivating below-par players to fight above their weight, but I can't see him being the man to get England's bunch of egos to pull their finger out. That would take someone with a bigger ego than them, a top continental coahc.

You know how it's a sign of getting old when you can't tell the difference between satire and reality?

Well, if you thought this thread was full of comedy options, what about this?

Harry Redknapp?

Steve Coppell?

Should be one of:

Lippi
Capello
Mourinho
Benitez
Wenger
Hiddink

There's no decent British option. For all the talk of Redknapp - he's done bugger all - show me the bulging trophy cabinet because you can't be a wheeler dealer at international level. You get what you're given in terms of prolly 20 players who could play internationally and make the most it.

Ditto Broooking...what has he actually won as a manager? O'Neill....hmmm....may be a top bloke but I have my doubts.

The only view on this that really matters is the Sports Editor of the Sun. If he doesn't like the sound of the proposed England appointment, he'll just hound him until he walks away; his whole private life, photographers following his family 24 hours a day, ringing the doorbell and phone - also 24 hours a day.

Absolutely one huge power trip.

Re. redknapp... my only point is that his england teams would at least be more entertaining than mclaren's. Thing is though when he managed west ham, we either won 4-2 or lost 7-0. Can't see the english fans liking that :D although I do think he's improved since those days.

I don't think brooking is a serious candidate. But his win ratio as west ham manager is probably one of the greatest ever :D something like played 15 won 10 draw 3 lost 2.... not that it means much.

Agreed about o'neill. We need a proper big name.

I'd go for an Englishman tbh.

Stuart Pearce, Alan Shearer, Harry (watch your silver) Redknapp,

Forget big name foreigners - they cost too much money.

Don't break the bank chasing a dream that's not going to happen, it's been done, it didn't work out.

Save the money and spend it at grass roots level.

So they should make the same mistake they just made?

Maybe...but look at City...started well, when things started to go slightly wrong it rapidly fell apart. U-21s he's doing well but lacks track record.

Shearer's a joke...the least inspiring person I can think of.

yep. saw some sports editor being interviewed yesterday on SSN (yes, the irony didn't escape me) about the effect of the press. His line was "we just report what happens". Sneaky bastard.

Yes, look at Citeh. Given fuck all money - had to sell players and he kept them up against the odds.

If he had the money Sven had I'm sure they would be top half of the table.

Shearer a joke?!?! Bollocks, I can imagine his team talks, with Phil Collins blasting out of the stereo in the changing room to get the players fired up!;)
