Who plays sport competitively here?

I play football, highest amateur level in my pomp, but now in the ranks of over 35. I also play Golf competitively. I represent my club in league matches against other clubs.

Does ping pong count? If so then no i'm not competitive at all although sojourner is terrible, loses her temper if she doesn't win (which she never does btw :) )

'ping-pong' most certainly doesn't count.

Table-tennis does ;)

Rowing, although i'm effectively without a club at the moment and only doing ergs, not sure i'll stick with it. Thinking of going for marathon running in the mean time.

Nope, although one of my running routes goes pretty close, i turn right south onto the navigation. Could swing by some time.

Pseudo, love to but i'm not a fan of the early mornings as it is, getting up in time to fly out would be too much.

My options for rowing aren't helped by the fact that my other half is in Warrick so i spend half my weekends up there, you can't get a competitive crew training that way.

continuity is a problem when you're "grown up". I'm doing the Head of the Charles with my old London club, it's become more of a scratch outing in which we do very badly, but have a good social weekend. I use a single quite a bit just so make the logistics easy.

I beat the best player in the league once though. and he bought me a pint because no one had beat him in a few years. Except for me.:) Doesn't that make me an athlete?

Cycling but my last race was in '92:eek:

Managed to finish ahead* of Chris Boardman who about three months later would win Olympic gold.

* Well, it was a time trial and I started some 13 minutes ahead!

Amateur sport FTW!

There are quite a few athletes on the boards and I love when they share their triumphs and and efforts.

Im aware of triathletes, marathon runners, rowers and competitive cyclists on here.

This thread is in tribute to those of you who get up at ungodly hours to train, who dedicate weekends to sporting endeavour, and who set personal goals and strive to achieve them.

What sporting activity do you take part in regularly? Nail your colours to the mast!

Does pool count?

Don't do anything now, i'd love too but my knees and back are a bit knackered :(

Used to play a lot of hockey, was never very good but i enjoyed it. Was quite good at netball but didn't like it so much. Used to sail in a mirror dingy as well, me and me mate were north wales girls champions one year (due to the fact that we were the only girls competing :D). My last competitive sport was cycling. Mainly timetrials, would place if no-one any good was riding. Rode in one with Yvonne MacGreggor once, she totally whipped my arse (so to speak) put 5 minutes into me on a 10 mile course. I wasn't very good tbh :D Did a couple of road races, the one that sticks in my memory was an all women's race. When we were all lined up behind the start car the organiser apologised for the smallish field because a lot of the girls were riding in the tour d'feminine. I still came last, got a sweatshirt for it though and was clapped by the small crowd by the finish line every time i completed a lap. I couldn't stop cos of them really :D

On balance I would say yes :)

I waded into controversy in the beginning the thread by questioning Poker's sporting credenitials :)
I found your same question on the Guardian's Notes and Queries board.

Any "sport" which can be played while smoking is definitely a "game"...

More imortantly Attica, are you any good? :)

Of course - I have won many tenners, played for teams etc.:D

I run a seven a side football team down Dulwich Hamlet

We are going through a lean period, results wise. Always the same during the holiday period - one keepers fecked his wrist, the other his collar-bone - keepers are like drummers

:)

Seems you had a parallel "career" to me - Boardman took about 5 out of me on a ten.
Did you ride the Cheshire circuits much?

I am the only person in my house who doesn't:D. However, this means I provide transport, carry the water/energy bars/spare shoes/etc, provide cricket teas, wash the smelly/sweaty/muddy clothes, work out all the scheduling and spend half my life sitting around watching them all.

OH - cycling and cricket
son - rugby and cricket (has given up football, thank god)
daughter - running, basketball and hopefully soon rowing.
