There's no "meant" involved. Different writers write the character differently depending on their own ideas of what entertaining is. I like Moore's version best, which is why I like Ledger's joker best. Interpretations vary. Opinion and fact are different things.
By "original intent" I was referring to the Joker from Batman #1. In that version he was simply an insane maniac who killed people for the pure fun of it. Ledger's Joker pretty much nails this.
It was only after their stupid little censorship board got their hands on things that the character lightened up a little.
It lightened up further in response to the television show, not the other way around.
The new graphic novels are basically a return to the Golden Age version of the comic.
