Best bang for the buck? Spanish at the moment. Would probably still, however, choose French wines if money was no object. Or NZ sauvignons.

I love Portugal for interesting everyday drinking wines mind.

I love NZ wine, but trying to cut down on the air miles

I love it too - but it's fucking ridiculously overpriced as well

Can't choose between a few - depends on what I fancy, although I have bought a bottle of rioja today - and i do buy a lot of that

 I can't believe I'm the only one so far to put American wine. Napa Valley wine from California is even proclaimed by the snobby French to be some of the best in the world

Ditto varietal reds and eiswein from the Niagara region in Ontario and whites from the Okanogan Valley of British Columbia.

I only like dry white wine. At the moment I usually buy a Chilean Sauvignon Blanc. Asda's is great, and less than £3!

I voted French 'cos I tend to holiday there and always bring a few (cases) back.

However last week I was in deepest , darkest Suffolk and saw a sign for a vineyard. Bought a bottle of Red and a bottle of dry White just to try them (about £9 per bottle !).

I enjoyed the red and my other half who is a Francophile Fundermentalist said the white was pretty good as well.

its not about the country, its about the soil. try wine from grapes grown on volcanos. more nutrients in the soil, better grapes, better wine. yumyum.

Never had a good bottle of Argentinan wine, I don't think they have forgiven us for the Falklands yet :(

Funny, becuase I've never had a nasty bottle of Argentinian.

Have you tried a malbec? Not too pricey, either, a lot of them.

Other than that - generally it depends on the year it was made and the grape type rather than the country of origin. French wines from 2005 and 2007 are a pretty good batch, in my experience.

ETA: I've never had a nice Romanian wine, though.

Aussie wine (the better stuff, not the corner shop staples) is just as good as the old world stuff, when most people slag off new world wines (like my Dad) it's because they don't actually know, not having ever tried two rivals, but feel that's the way it should be.

As for which country produces the best? It's got to be France, but only just.

I prefer new world reds generally. Italy and France for whites. I had a dessert wine years ago from the US, can't remember the name of it, but it was very nice. It was a red one, which is a bit unusual for a pudding wine

I don't think I have a favourite country for wines. I know I like an oakey red and oaky white. And an occasional rose wine but it would need to be really chilled. Oh, and good ol' Cava serves my 'Champagne' urges. And a glass of Amontillado sherry goes down a treat in winter.....

I sound like a walkin' Oddbins. :hmm:

Aussie shiraz usually can't be faulted similar with Kiwi reds , Chilean, Argentinian reds ok cheaper than similar quality French wines not so keen on South African reds find they usually don't meet the same grade as the Aussie/Kiwi similarly priced (£6-9 a bottle)wines.
