Who is your favourite food writer?

Julia Childs, if she's still alive.

Recipes read like instructions in an organic chemistry prelim.

And voilà, you've never cooked anything more complex than a fry-up, and if you OBEY without question, out it comes.

Something that would cost you £100.00 in Chelsea.

Claudia Roden (for the cultural detail)
Jane Grigson (for interesting historical/literary facts about dishes and vegetables)
Nigel Slater (for actual recipes)
Anthony Bourdain (for the full horror of what actually goes on in commercial kitchens)
Marcella Hazan (for when I want to cook really good Italian food AND feel thoroughly bullied by a very exacting Italian-mother-in-law type - she's STRICT!)

She died last year, I'm afraid. You can still have her as your favourite writer though.

I know! I looked up her recipe for pesto and it specified 32 basil leaves. 32! Why that number? And basil leaves are all different sizes. I felt like she might chase me down the road with a rolling pin if I didn't do what she said though.

I once met a particularly literate creme brulee :)

Marks and Spencer are my favourite author. They've done two of my simplest pulling / shortly-after-pulling cookbooks :o

Then onto my OTHER cookbook (Nigel Slater) when it's got to a stage where it doesn't matter how badly I fuck up :)

Then onto NO cookbooks and winging it with fantastic intuition once I'm beyond the I'll-do-something-from-a-recipe-book-and-not-trust-my-own-judgment stage :)

I always liked Jonathan Meades. I thought he was a prize arrogant c-nt, but that was part of the appeal :D
