Who is the Stig? (TopGear)

Most people's money is on as the current Stig, though the theory is there have been various 'specialist' Stigs for specialist vehicles (F1 Car, snowmobile, etc).

This is likely. Heikki Kovalanen was "the stig" when he drive the Renault F1 car as Renault will not let anyone other than their employeed drivers (at the time Alonso, Kovi and Franck Montagny) drive the car in anger. Hammond's laughable attempt was in an older car.

I was under the impression there's loads of them, depending on the week and how available the drivers are.

Jason Plato has been mooted, as has Tom Onslow-Cole, the Vauxhall factory driver in the current BTCC series... though I reckon he (and possibly Plato) would be way too busy.

'Parrently this is he.

All this begs the question, why is he/they called the stig?

According to the Wiki, it's one of Clarkson's public school names for newbie kids.

He wanted to call him the Gimp, but that was deemed to dodgy.

Black stig was Perry McCarthy, white stig is Ben Collins.

If you go to any Top Gear event such as the Live event down at Earls Court, Ben Collins' name is always in the programme as "stunt driver" or "advisor" although he is never seen in person.

;)

When he advises the celebrity drivers does he do it through the helmet, or take that off and do it normally? Should imagine he keeps it on which would nake communication a bit more difficult.

I'd have loved to see what Colin McRae could have done. He wouldn't have been as quick as the F1 drivers, I don't think, but it'd have been interesting to see how he approached it. RIP Colin. :(

I saw Colin McRae race a Prodrive Ferrari 550 Maranello at the Le Mans 24 Hours the last time before he died. He would have had a great future as a sportscar and endurance driver judging by his performance in that race.

His very first major circuit race and he picks the toughest endurance race in the world (barring the madness of the Dakar Rally, obviously) to put in a stunning performance on a track he'd never even seen until the test day two weeks before the race.

A great loss to motorsport.

:(
