Who is the best DJ in the world?

Mystery Guest, cos he really is the special one.

Closely followed by me (As in being the next best dj in the world, not that I closely follow him around or anything peculiar like that......)

i saw Dave Clarke try to scracth techno at Exit and he really shouldn't have bothered in public.

But you should hear him play the drums

...seems like a consensus is forming for Surgeon.

I'm surprised that Jeff Mills hasn't really had a mention, neither has Laurent Garnier or Jacques le Cont, Nathan Coles or Nils Hess....

TBH who the best Dj in the world is would depend on what genre and style one had in mind...

Aw fuck it! - Tony Blackburn....

Jeff Mills was a big favourite of mine for years, but he's a bit one dimensional and totally joyless. Surgeon has some range and a deviant sense of humour

...that's not how a field full of very munty munters felt about ten years ago as the sun came up and Mr Mills launched into one of his three-deck assaults on the senses... One of the finest sets I've heard to date...

...I'm always up for deviant humour though ;)

Dj Shadow definitely deserves a mention as well....

Jeff Mills is soo 1995.

Everytime I see him these days I wonder if he has bought any new records since the first time I saw him.

I'd say my favourite electronic DJ's at the moment are

Surgeon
Luke Vibert
Rob Hall

Vibert does sometimes play lacklustre sets, usually I find when he just starts playing jungle/drum & bass then he tends to be a bit boring, mainly because he seems to limit himself to playing at around 165 bpm +...I like it when he starts playing hip hop and goes through the genres and tempos playing Acid House, Disco, 80's stuff, Techno etc

oh, i'm not saying he's not wonderful, and ten years ago i saw him do some amazing sets. But his general pofacedness and lack of variation mean I probably wouldn't bother going out of my way to see him play again

ok i need to hear Surgeon.

this thread has convinced me, you can't all be fucking wrong :)

what i love about him is he obviously comes from a background in stuff like Coil, Nurse With Wound, industrial stuff etc. Has a really wide range of influences, perhaps wider than a lot of the more Dance Year Zero DJs, and throws all that in. Plus he manages to chuck things like dubstep in to a techno set seamlessly. He keeps you guessing, he actually makes me laugh out loud sometmes with the cheek of what he does. And yet - he's fucking banging :D

Yeah I really love it when he plays some more unusual stuff that you wouldn't expect to hear.

When he played Joy Division - Atmosphere at the start of his set @ Bloc, I thought that was a proper "moment".

Really like the edit of Depeche Mode - World In My Eyes he plays out too.

there was a point in his recent Bleep set when i was PRAYING that he'd drop Here Come The Warm Jets. never been more convinced that an off-the-wall choice would be just perfect..

I was hoping he'd play "Backwater". He played that on the show he did for my podcast.

really? superb :D

eta: is the story about him sticking on Fool's Gold and going for a piss true? :D

He'd think so anyway.

At least he knows he's a genius even if we all think he's a wanker.

Foolishly went to see him recently & it was utter wank. Self congratulatory bollocks from begining to end.

He played Fool's Gold at Werk. Surgeon virgins: Google 'Mixes DB', get on the site, click 'Artists', then 'Surgeon' and help yourself. The European DJ sets tend to be more straight up banging techno, though they're excellent, but I recommend the Glade, Werk and Sequence sets, but the best are hrs studio sets. The best by far is Food For Thought, but For Dog Faces Only is wicked too. Also check his Bleep43 set on Bleep's podcast - it features a more unusual selection of tracks, including the aforementioned Eno song and The Fall's Hit The North. And a load of awesome noise.

It was the Grooverider mix of Fools Gold he played I think.
