Who flies London-Newcastle?

Four of us went to Bognor for an ironic day trip once. We had a non-ironic game of crazy golf, which we took far too seriously. Then we had to drive around until we found a pub that would serve a menu suitable to a vegetarian AND someone whose food tastes seemed to ossify at the age of five.

The other two of the four (other than me and the kabbess, obv.) have three kids now, which stops us living up those kind of kerrazy days any more. Damed kids.

Well, I have to say, it really is pretty difficult to figure out for yourself that flying from London to Newcastle is going to take far longer than the train, and that the train journey is an incredibly easy one without any changes, even if you are an intelligent person with access to the internet.

So it's just as well the U75 transport forum is here to help people through this kind of difficult and specialised research.

19th Dec, coming back 21st Dec. Going up for the weekend to watch Middlesbrough play Newcastle with a Boro mate of mine, staying up the weekend and going to Whitby, his home town.

There's currently no engineering works planned for either the 19th or 21st, so you should have a normal journey time of just over 3 hours.

How/when are you going to Whitby? Most trains stop at Darlington which would save you going all the way to/from Newcastle if that was more convenient.

Yeah, you're right. I do love train travel, I'm just not keen on the idea of missing a day off work cos I am stuck in Crewe for 3 hours or what have you.

That line does Peterborough, Darlington, York and Newcastle. And possibly a couple of others that I don't notice. It doesn't always stop at them all. I'm sure I've been on trains that have only stopped at one place between london and newcastle.

Why do you worry about getting stuck in a delay on the train but not on the plane?

I'm pretty sure you'll find that train punctuality is better than any airlines on that route and certainly better than any of the Ryanair/Easyjet nonsense.

No comparison for me; the train is just such a pleasant, chilled out experience compared to that airport bullshit. Town centre > Bamb.

I think there might still be a service or two that's non-stop from London to Newcastle. Most, however, stop at two or three of: Stevenage, Peterborough, Grantham, Newark Northgate, Doncaster, York, Darlington and Durham. NXEC journey planner here: full pdf timetables can be found on a link a bit down the page.

I'm kind of with teuchter here: it's not exactly difficult to fathom out how long it's going to take or how much it'll cost to get from London to Newcastle, and he's also right that the railways' punctuality figures are way better than any budget airline.

And I have to say "your mum"

Going to Whitby by car.

Taaaaaa very much for the help

I've genuinely never ever had a delay using either one of those airlines

Found a £105 return by national express. This weekend is getting progressively more and more expensive the more I look into it. I truly wish I'd never agreed to go now, but Whitby should be pretty.

That's a rubbish price.

Fly.

Sitting on the train's borin' anyhow. At least you're kept busy at the airport with taking shoes off and shopping.

19th Dec - 22nd Dec. A weekend, essentially.

I've just put your dates into thetrainline.com, travelling after 10am each day, and it's returning tickets from £26.50 out and £35.50 return - so the whole lot would cost you £62 plus trainline's £1 booking fee. You'd probably be able to get it down further than that if were prepared to use early-morning or evening trains.

I'd have to take 2 days off work though. It's just not worth taking two days off work if the best I am going to get out of it is some fun and good memories with my friends.
