Who flies London-Newcastle?

Found it for 45 quid all in on easyjet. Gotta factor in 30 quid stansted express though...how reliable/comfortable are the trains? I'm not anti train by any means - definitely my preference, in fact, but I don't wanna be on some 20 hour nightmare trip.

Yes. If you want to boil it all down to the bare bones, yeah. But I wouldn't do it myself, I'm hiring a big Greek bloke to do it for me. As per.

Emmissions table London to Newcastle & back:

Carbon Emissions
Comparative CO2 emissions for your rail journey of 537.46 miles (single passenger)

Transport Type Estimated kg CO2 Compared to rail
Rail 49.91 kg -

Aeroplane 161.23 kg 111.32 kg more CO2

Bus/Coach 58.99 kg 9.08 kg more CO2

Car - Diesel 169.96 kg 120.05 kg more CO2

Car - Petrol 177.92 kg 128.01 kg more CO2

Motorcycle 100.42 kg 50.51 kg more CO2

I'm surprised driving and flying are as comparable in terms of CO2 as that.
Not comparing like with like. That'll be a full aeroplane done per passenger as compared with a single-occupancy car. If there are two of you in the car then it will be half as much per passenger as the plane. With a full car, it'll be comparable to the train -- maybe even less.

It's 3 hours on the train from king's cross. Usually reliable, check for engineering works.

The trains are as comfortable as planes and you can log onto urban from your laptop.

If you're travelling by train on a Sunday, however, look out for engineering works that can fuck everything up.

Can you really be arsed with going through an air port just for this short journey and all the hastle this involves?

Go on - admit it. You posed the question here so you'd get a few geeks to go through all the transport options in great detail so you don't have to bother.

This

It'll take longer by plane (and be far less interesting a journey) with all the mucking about at either end

Quite.

What really gets me about airlines offering you the chance to throw in a few shekels to offset your emissions is that they don't take in to account how full your flight is.

London-New York-London on a fully loaded 747 is going to be a lot less emissions per passenger than a 747 where you are the only punter.

You seriously reckon it'll be longer by air, yeah? I genuinely hadn't considered weighing them up, I just presumed by air would be cheaper and less of a hassle. I suppose with the need to check in stupid early that counts against air...I just reeeeeeeeeally wanna avoid huge delays etc.

Depends how close you live to the airport. But if you want to avoid huge delays, the last place you want to be going is an airport!

Don't forget the chance of a free prostate massage at security when you fly. The railways don't offer anything remotely similar.

Anyway, the real answer to the question, 'who flies London to Newcastle' is 'yuppies' and 'businessmen'

Ta, do you know the train company?

National Express.

I travelled by train from Edinburgh (same line but 1.5 hours further away) to London while my friends went by air. the train was probably a bit quicker or about the same time. By the time you get to and from airports, check in etc...

But do watch out for sunday travel. the booking site should tell you if there are engineering works.

Corrected that for you.

:hmm:

More and more I find that when I have a journey it's not about how long it takes but how I can pass the time. It's not often you get a few hours to spend just chilling out, reading, chatting, playing games - whatever. I find flying very cramped and generally unpleasant - to be avoid at all costs.

In my mind to be only concerned about the speed of a journey misses the point of travel.

Yeah, you're right. I do love train travel, I'm just not keen on the idea of missing a day off work cos I am stuck in Crewe for 3 hours or what have you.
