Because I am old enough to remember, it's part of my experience as an England supporter, and it's been just as disillusioning for me than any of the agonising defeats in major tournaments over the years, and it always put me off actually going to England games. Happily the problem seems to have subsided since the turn of the century, but I've got friends my age who basically gave up on England because of it and, without supporting any other nation, still take no real interest in the national football team as a result. Why mention hooliganism when there are adults who aren't old enough to remember the last time there was widespread disorder associated with England?
It's 'only' 48 yrs of hurt, surely?
My ancestral heritage allows me to support Germany![]()
Yeah well. I knew people who went and reported scenes other than those eagerly reported by scum journalists looking to entertain the easily shocked at home. As El Ahrairah suggested, there also seems to be an element of English football followers who, for whatever reason, seem to think they're too cool to support England and enjoy seeing England fail. I've always found that a bit odd.
I'm going to support Brazil. It's in their country, after all.
Hmmm? Barefoot on the beaches? happy go lucky? playing with a smile? samba beats? Mardi gras? Isn't it? Marvellous.

I seeEngland.
Other countries for various reasons-
Holland- Dad used to go there for work quite a bit when I was growing up and we visited his colleague's families etc. My cousin's husband is Dutch.
Greece- My Mum lives there.
Australia- A Swindon Town player is in the squad.
Mexico- Got family out there on my partner's side.
I doubt itI see
People don't get to choose where they're born but they certainly have a right to choose which football team they support, for whatever reasons they choose to support them.well, i am english and not one of these nobbers who thinks they're making some sort of clever political point by not supporting their home team for no good reason.
i always have a few other teams i hope do well though, for vague political reasons, so what do i know.

That's simply not correct. There are all sorts of unacceptable reasons for people to support football teams.People don't get to choose where they're born but they certainly have a right to choose which football team they support, for whatever reasons they choose to support them.
Well yes. That's exactly where this nonsense ends up. With children unsure of who they are, cut adrift in the world and subject to a very real danger of growing up to be an utter nobber. One of my nipper's mates (10) has a Brazil shirt and has stated he's going to play for them when he's older.
He's half English and half Welsh![]()
