Who are the most typecast actors?

Wesley Snipes

Can't see him being cast as an incurably romantic lisping homosexual pacifist librarian somehow

Of course he may well play a disabled person if he's after an Oscar but that's a bit different...

Have you seen To Wong Foo Thanks for Everything, Julie Newmar ?. Crap film, but he plays a drag queen in that. He was also rather good in more romantic roles in Jungle Fever and One Night Stand.

There're a lot:

Tom Cruise - The overtly (or sometimes brazenly) homoerotic hero with 'more to him that meets the eye'.

Keanu Reeves - Silent, mature, one facial expression.

Will Smith - Haha, the 'jive' hero. who can't act (except in Fresh Prince of course).

Captain Jean-Luc Picard - The other kind of typecast (which isn't type cast of course), a good shakespearian actor but you can't help but think he's about to say 'get those phase-resonators realigned with the plasma core'.

Scott Bakula - will always be Sam Beckett from Quantum leap, despite his disastrous turn as the clearly republican captain of Enterprise in... Enterprise.

etc etc

i agree about Steve Buscemi, especially the way he's used to inject some indie quirkiness into shitey blockbusters.

He was great as a gay hustler in his first film Six Degrees of Seperation. I think he can act, unfortunately just like Wesley Snipes above he mostly chooses roles for the pay check and that don't challenge him.

Have to remember to see that at some point - but, as you say, picks the roles that fill his pockets so one of the proper kinds of typecast.

morgan freeman - wise old black man

for the real victiims of typecasting you have to have the ethnic thugs

that chinese guy with a bald patch on top and long hair at the back as the chinese thug (in every hollywood film with a chinese thug) or the dude from 187/dangerous minds etc latino thug

also the guy from the beggining of devils advocate who was typecast as a paedophile, must be pretty rough :(

Bolo Yeung, quintessential kung fu bad guy

tom cruise's formula - earned him millions. :)

pool player, pretty damn good one too, until he has a crisis of confidence. he needs a good woman to restore his confidence and he wins the tournament.

barman, pretty damn good one too, until he has a crisis of confidence. he needs a good woman to restore his confidence and then he goes on to make drinks at alarming speeds.

nascar driver, pretty damn good one too, until he has a crisis of confidence. he needs a good woman to restore his confidence and he goes on to win the race. (she was so good at restoring confidence they got married)

fighter pilot.....

irish(?!) fist-fighter...

lawyer... takes on the general and has crisis just before he has him in the stand. thank god he fell for Demi Moore the night before. he was gonna quit! oh no!

sports agent... thank you renee!

there are exceptions.... maybe i can think of some more...

i know exactly who you mean. i've seen him as a serial killer in one of segal's movies... he gets shot in the church at the end. that's rough. :(

oh i remember, yeah. my one's another though. rough typecast as the 'social hermit who emerges once in a while to kill little girls' type character. does he approach these characters method style? :(

I didn't think he was the one you meant, but he's another example. Unless I've just missed the films in which he played the good-hearted, world-saving whale biologist... :( :D

Random director: Hey we need an old oriental guy to look wise.

Casting director: Japanese, Chinese... Korean maybe?

Random Director: I went to the Kevin Kostner School of Geography and Culture, I know not of these things...

Casting Director: No worries, I'll give Pat Morita a call!

Sadly died last November though.

It's not so much that Tom Cruise gets typecast, the problem is that he plays every part the same way.

I've just realised that all of these actors are blokes.

How about:

The same goes for other actresses who mostly do romantic comedy (Sandra Bullock, Julia Roberts, Drew Barrymore, Reese Witherspoon)

Getting too old to do "perky" Meg Ryan has recently made attempts to get away from her rom-com image, but to little success.
