Who are the best mainstream modern lefty punk band?

Propagandhi for mee threee, at least their early stuff. 'How to clean everything' is about as good an album as you're gonna find ahhricken. Honorable mentions for I Spy, Operation Ivy, Capdown & Victims Family.

what happend to the in the last 15 years bit in the op?

In that case:

capdown, bad religion, the king blues and propagandhi for me.

Oh I just re-read the title, says 'mainstream' so I dunno... maybe I'd include Bad Religeon, Fugazi, Dead Kennedys, NoMeansNo, Minor Threat... still Propagandhi FTW tho.

Propagandhi are easily my fave of the bands mentioned here. Their most recent album, Supporting Caste, is really, really excellent. As good as anything they've done, imo.

Had the enormous pleasure of seeing 'em live in March, too. Wicked.

Propagandhi are ONE band I've not yet ticked off my 'must see' list.

Anti Flag's music is ok but singing is dreadful, and his speeches are worse than Gordon Brown's.

I don't think i've heard the word 'best' and 'mainstream' follow each other in punk circles since the late 70's, it is just washed out mediocre bands who may once have been good (listen to Bad Religion's "Suffer" and compare their last 5 LPs)

Success seems to ALWAYS destroy bands

if anyone wants to hear some GOOD unknown bands PM me for list of cheap goodies (I also have the big names too but i wouldn't recommend em!)

I heard a snippet of that album from a mate and it sounded very 'metal', like they were going back to their early thrash roots before they turned punk. But I guess that's what I liked about them in the first place, they were very speedy, riffy and flippant compared to the four-chord polemics of their peers.

Yeah, it is a bit - I played it to someone recently who's a metal fan, and he said "this is punk?"...

It's very fast, very riffy... very Propagandhi though, to my mind (see YouTube links above).

:(

Well, this thread has done what I intended it to do, which is give me lots of new music. Also made me look like an idiot for forgetting some fairly obvious bands.
