White Town, "Your Woman"

Wasn't it John Peel who picked the song up from a demo, played it, and it somehow got adopted by the daytime DJs too?

No, it was Radcliffe I think. The Guardian did a thing on One Hit Wonders a while back. Here's what Jyoti had to say then:

White Town
Your Woman
No 1, January 1997

Jyoti Mishra (vocals, guitar, sequencer and samples)
Jyoti Mishra: I recorded Your Woman in my home studio in Derby. My girlfriend suggested I send it off somewhere. But I'm not exactly the easiest package to sell: some fat Asian bloke who does his own recordings. I could only afford to send off five copies. Mark Radcliffe and Simon Mayo played it on Radio 1. I had more requests than Oasis and was quite freaked out. It was number one in Britain and eight other countries. I knew I would be a one-hit wonder. People were very strange towards me when I had a hit. Musicians who consistently said my stuff was rubbish suddenly changed their tune. And I became a lot more attractive to women. Amazing! I couldn't leave my house because people would start whistling my song at me, which became a bit wearing. If I had the chance to have a hit single again I'd probably say no - unless they offered me 20m quid.

Can I add Shanks and Bigfoot - Sweet Like Chocolate to the time travel songs? :D

Oh and Your Woman is an ear worm, I used one of the lyrics in a blogpost and got five replies admonishing me for making them listen to it :)

For me that song is always linked to 'Blueboy - Remember Me'. They were both quirky tunes that happened to be in the charts at the same time.

you know Blueboy was Lex who was the MC in The Shamen before Mr C? he used to DJ at a club I ran in the early 90s. Married a girl from along the road from me.

My mate Fat Bob knew that White Town guy and gave him his first write ups in a belfast fanzine he was doing at the time and put some of his track on a comp tape he gave away with the last issue. when is this gig you're putting on?

Is there one that's linked with Moloko's 'Sing It Back' (dance remix) or am just imagining it...?

No word of a lie, between the beginning of this thread and your post, I had randomly started singing this in my head already - which suggests it is linked to one of the other tracks already mentioned...though I have no idea which one.

Probably one of the last cd singles i ever bought, the b track was quality if i remember right. Cheers for the vid ianw, ah the memories:cool:
