White Season: The Poles Are Coming!

BTW Gangmaster is that a proper term? Only I've only ever heard it used when people talk about illegal immigrants, so it was interesting to see itused in a 'legal' sense.

Its a legal term, there was a Gangmasters Act a couple of years ago after the chinese cockle pickers drowned in Morecambe Bay. There are lots in Peterborough because its such a rich agricultural area. A lot of them are extremely dodgy ime.

They never said anything about a 60 hour week though lol

They were offering them 1 days work, which they wouldn't take.

No, the fella who had just arrived from Poland was given one days work, the other people they talked to there (the guy earning 2K a month etc) said they were working 60 hours a week. Awful, backbreaking work picking vegetables, they earn every penny.

That wasn't what I was talking about?:D

I'm talking about the guys outside the job centre who the presenter offered a days work to.....

I used to work in the service industry at a racecourse near where I used to live. That is, I worked on a bar on racedays. Exactly half the staff were from the local community, and then the other half were agency workers bussed in, seemingly from all over the place. I have never worked anywhere more cosmopolitan. There were a lot of Poles there, and out of any of the agency workers, they were the best, the ones you wanted working on your bar as they would just work and work with no complaints, no stealing etc.

I girls were beautiful as well.

i didn't think that one about polish immigiration told us anything we didn't already know, it just highlighted the fact that the system is not working and english people are suffering as a result. it's good to finally hear people on TV being allowed to voice their concerns without being labelled as racists. seems as though the tide is finally turning

One thing that confuses me is how the English workers can turn down jobs and still get JSA...

If the "english people" were as hard-working as the Poles there wouldn't be a problem...

Poles are a different race - who knew !

*checks DNA* :hmm:

That's the point maybe? 1 days work - mess up all benefits payments for how long?

When are you allowed to reclaim? Days, weeks??

You don't have to sign off to do 1 days work your supposed to make a declaration of earnings next time you sign on and your benefit is adjusted for that signing on period.

Or it used to work that way.

sorry what programme was that? This thread is about Here Come the Poles on BBC2 last night. :)

it just highlighted the fact that the system is not working and english people are suffering as a result

From the show last night the only people "suffering" were those too fucking lazy to do the jobs the Poles will, or those that are afraid of change.

Where did it do that? Must've missed that bit? :hmm:

umm, the bit where it showed the how the healthcare system was struggling to cope, how the schools couldn't accomodate the huge influx of children or deal with the multiple languages they spoke, how all the housing was being used for buy to let and was overcrowded, how the elderly felt they were like foreigners in their own country. pay attention next time and you might learn something

This is the fault of poor funding, not immigration.

ok, so what you took away from the programme was that immigration is great and has no detrimental impact on our society whatsoever? that's precisely the opposite of the message the programme was portraying

Where does he say anything approaching that?

You seem to have a worrying chip on your shooulder about this.

The program also clearly showed that a lot of businesses would go bust if not for immigrant workers.

1 days work isn't very helpful. I want a job but can't consider temping (unless it's a reasonably long contract) It messes up hb council tax benefit never mind just income support.

When I was single and living at my mums rent free it made sense to do a one day a week job from an agency - but when you've got bills to pay it messes stuff up. If they want 'lazy english ' people to do odd days work maybe try and find ways of not penalising them thru the benefits system when the work finishes.

So what have we learnt in this thread: That the JSA system isn't flexible enough to make the odd days work worth doing; that capitalism forces wages down really low; that immigrants will work for cheaper than natives; and that the social infastructure isn't necessarily able to cope.

none of these are problems with the immigrants though are they? really it seems that money drives it all. immigrants are just an easier target than the mass greed of the corporation or the demand for cheap food, goods and services by the consumer.

dtb, i assume that you don't shop in supermarkets or buy cheap products?

People are getting very hung up on this idea of the guys outside the dole office being offered one day's work, and then banging on about how just working for one day would affect your benefits. You're being a little bit literal, no, and missing the point

What is this, CBI 75, have I stumbled on a management site
