Which urbanites are writing books?

Ha! And Ha! Again. Tell that to William Faulkner, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Dylan Thomas, Malcolm Lowry, Jack Kerouac, Kinglsey Amis, Peter Ackroyd, Christopher Hitchens... need I go on? The *most* prolific writers spend much of their time feeling like crap. The difference between you (at present) and them is that they don't make it into an *excuse* for *not* writing.

I already said that godspot.

Yes but it's the hangovers/come downs that are the killers. Did they even bother or just keep themselves in a state of constant murkiness?

Kerouac wrote several of his books without sleep, over a few days on, all sorts of substances.

I'm not making it an excuse for not writing. Like I said, I write every day. Because IT'S MY JOB. But I have noticed that what I write is markedly less well written if I have a hangover or haven't slept well. That doesn't stop me writing.

At least I can construct a decent logical argument - which is something you seem entirely incapable of.

I'm glad you didn't say for gods sake there - the ramifications are simply unimaginable.

When asked to explain what passages in his books meant, Faulkner would reply: "How should I know, I was drunk when I wrote it."

that doesn't work for me either. i can only be properly creative when my brain is in pretty tip-top condition. I've been finding that taking drugs at the weekend makes me incapable of writing properly at least until thursday, often friday :(
which is one of the reasons I'll probably soon be taking less drugs than I have been lately.

I was just trying to be helpful to some people who wrote things like this. Because obviously we're not all Jack Fucking Kerouac.

Don't be such a bunch of stupid cunts - putting yourselves on the same side of the argument as Phil Dwyer? FFS!

Julie Burchill had a brilliant line about "writer" men who spend the years between 25 and 45 "rotting away in the Groucho Club, contemplating their novels." I do believe she had you in mind.
Nobody in their right mind gives a shit about what Julie Burchill thinks about anything. She's a no-mark hack currently rotting away in the darker corners of murdoch's tv empire.

Flaubert took 6 years to write madame bovary and 7 to write a sentimental education, and Joyce would laugh at your stupid protestant work ethic.

But Mr Archer wouldn't. That's you banjaxed.

Say what you like about Burchill, she has actually *written* rather a lot, hasn't she? In conspicuous contrast to some I could mention, and despite being a complete piss/cokehead. And you are quite wrong about Joyce, he was a meticulous and punctual worker, do you think Ulysees was produced by a wastral?

I'm with chrisfilter - drugs and creativity do not mix well :(
the initial inspiration for my book came as a result of being on mushrooms at PRoD.

I wrote a few bits of it on speed, on pills, on coke and on alcohol.. at one point i was on all four, sitting writing cross-legged on the floor at tribe of munt :D

mind you my book's shite! :D :D

wrote what i thought was 80% last november as part of www.nanowrimo.org

then mostly i put it aside until i came to berlin a few weeks ago nominally to get away from the distractions of london to be able to finish the last 20%

but what i have discovered is that the last 20% probably requires more effort than the previous 80% since this is where you fill in the gaps, especially the ones you'd been putting off because you have no idea how to write that scene and then one must also tie up all those tricky loose ends.. every single one :(

the second thing i discovered is that berlin has a lot more distractions that london

Do plug on with it though onemonkey - I've been looking forward to seeing it. Clearly you just need to take more drugs...

I'm writing something about China. Not getting very far so far though! It's not an easy place to write about, IMHO. Not compared to India.
It's very easy to write ill-informed shite about india though. specially if you're a hippy. not that I'm suggesting you are.

I was jsut about to regain the moment when D arrived in town and now instead i am planning a week of all out hedonism (cultural and otherwise)

i take the opportunity to find some drugs though :)

Ah yes, the evil D - having met her recently I can imagine how she would happily destroy one's plans without a second thought :p

That's true. I did write a 90-odd page novella about India. I should re-read it again and see if it was any good or just a load of idealistic hippie toss.

Let us know the verdict :D

btw I take it you've been to Tiger Leaping Gorge recently? Pretty impressive isn't it?

I have lots of ideas and things, but I have this block...like I know anything I write willl be shit. So I haven't done anything concrete yet ;)

No, in fact I didn't make it - we had problems getting tickets to Kunming from Wuhan, which meant our trip was delayed by a few days, so I only made it to Dali and Lijiang. (although Dali was well cool)

I am determined to go back and see it though!

A good way to deal with that might be to admit to yourself that the first stuff you write *will* be shit - but no one needs to see it but you, so don't worry about it. You can then rewrite and rewrite until it's not shit. This is what everyone does at the beginning unless they're some kind of one-in-a-million writing genius.

RD - you're right about Dali. When I wanted a place to write for a few months it was a toss-up between Dali and Pai in Thailand. Pai won, but I still think of going back to stay in Dali for a while.

I'm attempting something vaguely autobiographical at the moment, though proper publication is still only a distant dream. I'd be interested to hear what stuff other urbanites are working on.

I know a publisher ;)

Good luck with it, I've read some of your stuff before, including your long emails from Africa and I enjoyed it lots :)

Do you mind if I ask what you wrote while you were there?

Yep, totally wonderful place. Sure, a bit backpackery, but the cafes are the best I've been to just about in any place in the world... And the scenery is great too. So different from where i actually live in China, which is just urban sprawl...
