Derby is quite dominated by Sainsburys, until recently I reckon we were the biggest place in England without a Tesco (although they did have some Express stores and a store in nearby Mickleover)
I'm not very impressed with the new Tesco, mind. Loads of self service tils, not that big, long checkout queues and unhelpful staff.
This is true for most people, doubly so if you don't drive. There is no choice at all in many areas. The spread of Lidl has added to choice somewhat, but otherwise the country has been sliced up by the large supermarkets, which essentially enjoy local supermarketting monopolies.
I try to shop in little shops when I can. I sometimes get lazy and go to the supermarket, which will be whichever one has the local monopoly wherever I am.
I went to Lidl yesterday. I don't know if my local one is particularly bad, but I honestly don't see how people can do their whole shop there - it's rubbish.
I couldn't find the much talked about £8 Pimms, although I did get some decent German lager and 14 slices of bacon for £1.49.
Luckily Morrisons is next door so I got a litre of Pimms for £9.79.
Tesco
Morrisons (it's closest, but their meat and bread beat Tesco)
Costco
Lidl (though less so since Tesco started stocking some of the cheap-assed German stuff from the same supplier)
I suppose I like shopping at Costco the most because they give out free samples of everything. You should have seen how ecstatic I was when the Croydon one opened.
And we'd love to have an Aldi nearby. Somewhat less scummy than the Lidl, and it's actually possible to do a week's shop in there.
