True but if you avoid any old glam rock stars and sleeping with 8 year olds you should be OK.

I like most of south east asia but the best bits are not in lonely planet/rough guide.
Don't go to the areas where all the tourists go and you will have a far better time and learn a lot more as well.

What the first time you set foot in Asia? Rubbish. Why are some people labouring under the illusion that they're not tourists?

As everyone knows, child abuse only happens in S.E Asia.

Fucking scarky comment but you are right. It happens all over.
It's just that there is an element that do go to asia for kiddie shagging and/or abusing people in general.
It's cheap and there is a good chance the bastards will get away with it.

It happens everywhere, and everywhere there are bastards getting away with it. I was reacting to Belushi's troll more than anything else. It annoys me that a whole continent is reduced to sniggering about this one dreadful social phenomena. It's very patronising.

As it happens I have a Malay IC and an indonesia wife in my Indonesian house. Been as a tourist but I'm well past that now.
I still stand by my comment that the best way to see and understand other countries and cultures is to meet the people and not hang around in tourist bars.
That goes for asian countries or anywhere else in the world.

It was a joke rather than a troll, and unfortunately SE Asia does appear to be the number one destination for sex tourists.

No argument from me on that one. I have no time at all for the bastards that go to asia or anywhere else abusing kids. I've only ever met one bloke I would assume was there for kids but know a good few fat ugly fuckers that go to thailand for the prostitutes 'cos they can't get a shag here.
Sad thing is that they brag about it like it's some sort of conquest.

Well, I agree. But I bet the first time you went to Asia you hung out at tourist bars, Khao San Rd, etc. I mean, so what? There's a culture shock when you go there for the first time, and being around other tourists, getting advice, swapping stories, making friends, is a good way to relax into things. IMO, Thailand is the best place to start as it's a little less confusing than other countries in the region, the people are friendly and often speak English, and the tourist infrastructure is helpful for the inexperienced traveller.

Of course, you can go some unihabited island in Indonesia or the Phillipines, if you want, but would you recommend this to someone who'd never been to Asia before?

Friend of mine who's travelled extensively in the region has just come back from his first visit to the Phillipines which he absolutley loved.

Or Amsterdam? Or Eastern Europe? I'm not denyng what you say is correct, but it's very boring.

Now you are trolling ... When did I ever say it wasn't vile? And you were the one who made a 'joke' about it.

I di no such thing - I made a joke about what some in the Uk thing about single men travelling in SE Asia.

Your the one who described the subject of sex tourism as 'boring'.

No, I called you boring. It's boring to go on about sex tourism every time SE Asia is discussed. To reduce a whole region to that one aspect is tedious and condescending.

Heh, wriggling a bit now, sorry my rather predictable joke struck a raw nerve jbob, but really theres nothing 'boring' about sex tourism :(

First time I went I did do so for a couple of days but I toddled off to see some friends and got out of it pretty quick. I was just lucky to know some people out there.
For a first timer to asia I would suggest starting in KL, malaysia. Most there can speak english and there is plenty of wetern food and there are loads of tourists to get tips off. Try to get into the place as quick as you can and move on to somewhere like Melaka where you can start to get into the local culture but still have a safety net of english speakers and easy to access help. For a first time tourist these offer intersting places to visit and a safe start to touring asia. You can soon move on to Ipoh, Penang and Taiping that have fewer tourists and get more interesting if finding out about how the country ticks is what you want.
Stay in small, cheap motels and get talking to the staff. You will be supprised what you can pick up from them about things to see locally.
If someone offers to sit with you in a resaurant there is a better than average chance they are just being friendly but there are some con merchents out there so be a little careful. I've been invited to sit with a local family many a time and they have always insisted on paying for the meal.
Same all over asia where you will find the vast majority of people to be very helpful and friendly. The street hawkers offer good, cheap and enjoyable food that is usually better than the fancy restaurants.

It's not a 'raw nerve' and I never said there was anything boring about sex tourism. I just said you were boring for making what you admit is a predictable joke.

You seem very upset by it, we're nearly at the end of the page and your still banging on about it!

Just tell people your going to New Zealand for a couple of months if your worried about them thinking the worst ;)

You need to get out and travel more, then you might forget about caring what other people may think. Who cares that they think you're a nonce? That's them with the problem not you!

And if that is the case then i'm one fucking big nonce...

The problem with not going to se asia is all those magical experiences you'll never have.

Never fancied SE Asia tbh fela, love India though; fancy seeing some of the middle east next.

If you go to the north or south pole you should definitely manage to avoid the tourists.

Same goes for north korea, saudi arabia.

Fucking hell man, what is wrong with tourists? If you don't like them don't talk to them. Plenty of space for everyone. If you want peace and quite then go looking for it.

Oh I see, fancy joing up with your Islamist terrorist friends, do we?

Oh dear, he we go. If you're fat and/or ugly you're not allowed a shag?? Why are you denying them their pleasures?

And why can't they 'get a shag' there? That would appear to be very commonplace in britain judging by its sex industry.

Oh the irony. How can you get tips off them if you're so busy avoiding them?

Then i have it on good recommendation you should be getting to oman.

I also know that in nor-war times lebanon is a treat, but i'm not sure what state it is in now.

Seriously man, you can't be worried about what ignorant fuckers think about your holiday choices? Like i said earlier, i really enjoy telling people in england every time i get back there that i live in thailand. I like the inward whooosh you know is their first reaction, then i set about dispelling all the stupid myths.
