Which phone should I get?

It seems odd giving a range of phones like that which vary wildly in their prices. A Nokia 6301 is a great little phone from two years ago and goes for around half the price of the Tocco Ultra.

(Granted, I'd probably take the Nokia over it - touchscreens aren't my thing)

For what you say you need a phone for? Grab whatever you're used to. If you're an SE person, go for that. Same for Nokia or Samsung. On the Nokia front, the 6303 has a couple more features (proper 3.5" headphones, A-GPS) at the price of being hideous compared to its predecessor.

Or check which one goes for the most on Ebay, sell it and keep what you have.

I'm not an anything sort of person and still a bit lost.

So I am thinking blackberry or HTC tattoo.

Maybe samsung s5600 as I forgot to look at that. Actually I think I have got the sonys and the sams mixed up anyway. Lordy.

If you're considering a samsung try it first, I find them too weird to use.

Get the blackberry.

Well I just haven't looked at the samsung yet.

Why is the BB better than the HTC tattoo?

Actually when I said that I hadn't really looked at the tattoo, which looks good as well. Full QWERTY is why I'd choose Blackberry, but then again the tattoo has 3g which if you live in a 3g area might be useful.

What's 3g?

It can simply be described as the fastest mobile phone network. Most mobile phone networks have 3g coverage, however when not in 3g coverage your back on the bog standard "GPRS" network.

3g gives you faster internet speeds.

Can I use 3g in Japan?

If you don't mind tapping away on a screen instead of a keyboard, then the Tattoo is a very good choice. It's got just about everything you'll ever need.

Well I have wifi at home and on the trains I think but I can't imagine I would be using the internet on my phone. That would surely cost a bomb and what exactly would be the point? Maybe looking at google maps or checking train times. A little bit of planning can sort all that out before hand though.
However if I get one of the two long term jobs I am gunning for right now I think I might need internet on the go (or at least the ability to watch a film).

My wife changed her contract today. 1 month before she had to and she took a plan for £15 when she could have had the same for £5. Goodness knows what kind of phone she went for, she just chose over the phone.

It's not that expensive (if you stay in the country in which you bought it). A data package will cover all types of data, so that's primarily GPS, Internet and email. As an example the unlimited web bolt on from o2 is £7.50 a month when it's not bundled with a contract. You can get limited (capped usage) data bundles for much less on other networks.
I use the data bundle on my phone to access, email, urban, rss news feeds, weather reports, twitter, facebook, youtube, general web browsing, GPS tracking for walks, maps, google street view, online poker games (though not for real money yet).

You're a man in denial, the iPhone is the biggest home techy product since the Spectrum ZX. :p
Can you go away now please. You're awfully dull.

AS: the HTC Tattoo will do everything you need, unless you need a physical keyboard - in which case, get a Blackberry.

Yes I think it is a toss up between the two. The BB looks more robust but the Tattoo looks more radically different (and fun?) from anything I have had before.

I don't know why I get so worried about picking networks and phones. My wife just jumps right in and never gives a damn. So far she has always (without even looking) always got a far better phone than me. She has been on a terrible package for the last five years though.

The HTC will be more fun, it does more stuff and there's tons more apps available for it. I'd get that one unless you really, really need a physical keyboard.

I agree - I think you'll like the HTC more.

Remember you need to factor in the cost of a data bundle.

Not if I don't use a data bundle?
I can just get that later on top when I need it can't I? Orange charge £5 a month but I don't need to take that yet .

You don't need to take it yet or at all even, but if you use data - if you set it up to access your email for example - then it'll cost more without a bundle.

Yeah, that I am aware of (I realize that I am pretty much unaware of almost everything else). I think I will only get all that internet stuff as and when I need it. Right now I am happy to read email at home and use and A-Z.

Can you buy internet access for a month at a time or do you need to get locked into a deal for a year or so?

Dunno, you'll need to ask them, it's not obvious from the t+c on their website. (Orange, that is).

Hello again. I have just been talking to orange to see what sort of plan I have.

I have 750 minutes evening and weekend (+data minutes??) & 50 texts a month. So far I am only making about 60 minutes of calls a month and no where near 50 texts. I think the calls only count as free to Orange and landline phones.
£12 a month so they say, though I think it's more like £14.

They offered me 250 anytime any network minutes plus 100 texts and 8meg of internets for £10 inc VAT. However I will only be able to take this with the nokia 6303
3.2-megapixel camera
EDGE
GPRS
Bluetooth®
MP3 player
camera
music player
3.5 mm stereo headphone plug
8 x digital zoom
auto focus
tri band
USB compatible
speakerphone
call waiting/hold
call divert
vibrating alert
email
Java™ capable
flash
LED flash
video recorder
FM radio RDS
video ring tones

What will 8mb get me? I can get 500mb for £5 (to use within a month) as and when I want (no plan or contract) with any plan I go for.
