which OS for a PII 4oomhz PC?

I can barely run ubuntu on my pIII 800mhz 128mb ram laptop. I'd be amazed if it could even boot XP.

XP will run on a 386 with 4MB of RAM. Well, hobble perhaps, but it will boot. Just because it's not ideal, and won't be as good as a dual core with a GB or RAM dosen't mean it won't work.

That said, the advice about chucking it out and buying a cheap new machine is valid.

as the topic is on linux distros , i vote for puppy linux as well for low spec pcs.

Yeah, I'm posting this using PizzaPuppy 3 (a Puppy derivative) at the moment. I can log on to Urban with Firefox in PizzaPup or Puppy when I can't with Firefox (or any other browser) in Vector, my other Linux distro.

Puppy loads into and runs in RAM, so it's very fast. I think you need 128 MB minimum for this though (my computer's got 256 MB); less than that, say 64 MB, and it will still run but a bit slower.

well, after some disussion, I thought fuck it and intalled xp pro on it this afternoon

it'd appear to be working ok and at an ok speed too.

we'll see how it goes huh

I think I will have a look at puppy linux tho'

cheers guys

My PIII laptop with 128Mb runs XP Pro just fine.

well,
it is running XP pro (with no alterations to background stuff) just fine - I'm amazed and my wife is happy

hurrah and hussah! :)

interesting link you posted. I have to say it shocked me when they got xp working with an FSB of 8mhz!?!?!?!?!
The ethernet-card is more stable, it is PCI but runs still with 8 MHz,
so you can access the internet without a problem. Of course you need time, the homepage is availible after 10 minutes.
:D :D

well,
it (the PII with XP Pro) is still running fine and dandy-which is nice

I am posting from my laptop under Puppy linux - burnt a live cd about 20 minutes ago - it rocks-very easy to use/configure - will probably stick it on a usb stick and carry an OS and my files around
