for example Stuart Mccall was on the bench for England U21s but didn't play and therefore could play for Scotland later in his career. He got stripped ready to come and everything but the whistle blew and he couldn't get on. I'm sure if he had, his entire Scotland career would never have happened.

Apparently he took as long as he could getting stripped, down to retying his laces numerous times to prevent him playing for England.

Always smacked of "pap any old guff to the press, they'll lap it up and love me" though
