Which modem shall I get

Well the modem's quite warm to the touch as is the plug itself. I'm not sure though how normal that is.

Unless its capable of actually causing harm when touched I wouldnt worry about it. Have you tried uninstalling/reinstalling the modem?

I've got a couple of old USB modems that I've replaced over at my parents Minnie. I can't quite remember what they are, but they used to work just fine and are probably equal to the frog. If you let me know what OS you're using (which version of Windows) I'll see if any of them could provide a free, if not wireless, option.

I think I did that weeks ago.

I also rang Zen (shortly after that hot spell we had) and they said they'd had a lot of people ringing in with problems. It seems like their modems were overheating. Maybe mine got sunburnt and never recovered :D

Thanks for offer. I'm going to try newbie's first. If that doesn't work, I'll be knocking at your door ;)

Obviously if the new modems dont resolve the issue its a problem with the laptop itself, post back and let us know how you get on.

Right, I've met Newbie today. I tried to use the ruse of "do you want to come in and look at my radiators", to get deep down and dirty with him, but he wasn't interested. :(

I've got an hour to see if I can connect to this new modem, then I've got to go out again, so if you don't hear from me by 5.00pm, assume I've not got it working :D

:(

I get a message saying

Digital Signature Not Found

blah blah blah

Unknown Software Package

If you want to search for Microsoft Digitally signed software, visit the Windows Update website at http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com to see if one is available.

Do you want to continue the installation?

I click "yes" to continue with installation but I can't seem to connect :(

The fun begins........

Whats the exact error your getting when you attempt to connect does the computer "see" the modem?

can't remember. The same I get when my modem switches off.

I'll take a photo next time. That's what I did with that message up there as I'd never have remembered that.

Do you have any other usb devices that you could use to test that the usb port is functioning correctly?

eta: that error message you posted is actually ok it just means the maker didnt bother their arse getting their drivers signed which is common enough

well I have a 4 socket USB adaptor. My printer's plugged into one of them and that works fine

Maybe that particular socket is dodgy? :hmm:

My one does, Newbie's doesn't, which was most confusing.

There's no sockets in his either, except one lead so I had problems getting my head round where the telephone cable should be as I have a modem extension as computer and telephone socket are about 12 foot away from each other :D

IF newbies modem the one your using now is being powered by usb, plug it directly into the laptop and not your usb port expander as thats going to consideribly drop the amount of power available to the modem

I'm using my usb at the moment plugged into a USB 4 socket adaptor. I can't use newbie's

I'll have to try newbie's later as I've got to go out again

Did the router come as part of the Broadband package? If it did then its still theirs and all you have to do is ring them up and tell them its broken and they will send you another.

Modem is really, really on its last legs now, so much so, that it's switching off every few minutes so I barely even have enough time to read descriptions before having to start again.

What I currently have is a Thompson Speedtouch router (ADSL, USB).

I can only have ADSL USB as I have a Dell Inspiron 4000.

Now obviously that's going to die as well one day so one day I'll no doubt have to get a new computer. To save me buying modems/routers in the future, I was told that if I wanted to go wireless in the future (highly unlikely), I'd need a modem router.

So, I need a modem/router with ADSL and USB that can be used on a Dell Inspiron 4000 operating Windows 2000.

I'm going to post some up so you can tell me if they're compatible as can't stay connected long enough to read.

First one:

No, I had to by the router from Zen. As it's more than a year old, guarantee is out-of-date

there's a socket on the thick wire where the thin one plugs in, so unplug it and plug in your extension.

I don't do alcohol, sorry,

or damp patches :)

Yeah, I eventually got round having to plug one end of your telephone wire into the modem extension lead and the other into your modem itself, but the problem seemed to occur before that, (that error message I posted about earlier).

As for the alcohol, that's fine :D

You could have had a cream and jam doughnut but the builders had eaten them already :D

tried using USB port directly into back of laptop.

Just get
