Which Mac?

*gives up in face of PR speak

No, it's a reality based one. Honestly, you seem totally unaware of your bias on threads like this.

The Air ain't for me, but it's a well made, solid feeling laptop, which is unusual for something of that scale. The more expensive Vaio and Toshibas often feel cheap, suffering from even more underpowered processors that make using them more of a trial, especially when the often substandard keyboards and screens are taken into account.

Ask Kanda - he's had a try on one. Nobody is claiming that the Air's a perfect machine - hell I"ve even said repeatedly that it's not for me - but it does take a different approach to the compromises in making a 'ultra'portable laptop. It's untrue to hint that there are better specced, cheaper ultraportable laptops that tick the same boxes - the whole market sector is overpriced and offered as a luxury, not some kind of pint-sized desktop replacement..

Get a black MacBook - max out the specs. It's tougher, faster and has proper ports, a proper hardrive and a proper battery. Don't get a Pro - too overpriced for what you need - and not as tough as the macbook even if it is aluminium. The air has a seriously crappy hardrive.

Actually, knowing Kanda I'd say that the Air is the perfect laptop for him.

I've seen the look of sheer 'want' on his face when he sees some glitzy gadget that he hasn't got and I wouldn't wish that on anyone.

:D

(Went to BHP btw, oh my.. I could have spent a week in there! Came out with just a 12-24 Nikkor though, I was a good boy :))

One thing that might be important to Kanda from that review:

As I said before, I usually keep the screen brightness on the lowest setting out of personal preference, and all I ever do on my laptop (these days) is write and surf—sometimes with some music, and the bit of occasional graphic editing.

Those aren't exactly energy-intensive uses, and I can pretty regularly squeeze a good 3:45 to four hours out of a brand new MacBook or MacBook Pro battery.

I'll cut to the chase here: the MacBook Air's battery life sucks. A lot. I found it to be a pretty big disappointment, holding it to my admittedly-high standards. I ran down the battery from full charge four times and came out with an average of two hours and 33 minutes.

It was in that bloody shop that I tried out the D300 and immediately went from an idly curious window shopper to a fully fledged, all salivating, mission-obsessed "I WANT ONE NOW!" convert.

I steered clear of that counter because you had told me this. Just don't take it to Offline and tempt me... please! :D

I might get an iPhone for when the Air battery dies... (*joke*) :D

Right, after playing with the MacBook Air, I'm really tempted to get one.
Or should I be looking at one of the other Mac laptops?
I already have a Windows Desktop and Windows Laptop, this isn't a Windows v Mac thread, I'm just thinking about adding a Mac to that lot :)
So, advice please MacHeeeds?
Will mainly be used for Photo's/Email/Web etc.

Right - i you want it, get it - but don't get it as a primary machine.
A MacBook is less powerful in some ways, but much better connectivity
A MacBook pro would be a huge hunk of cash for no real benefit, in line with what you want to use it for.
A MacBook Air - if you travel a lot and want something sexy, it's a nice beast. Yes, there are other machines out there, but if you just want a Mac to use now and again and you have the spare cash to spend on it, I can't see any reason not to buy it. But if it's to be your main machine, don't get one (but I can see your main machines are windows).

It works quite well. I was impressed with the way some pro apps handled on the one I messed around with. It's not an easy upgrade and has just one (one?) USB port, and no optical drive.

If it's sexiness that's driving your decision, go get it. If you have a practical slant to this purchase, then save a few hundred quid to buy something made by Palm so editor likes you and get a MacBook - oh, and don't bother with the black one, why spend £100 more for that?

I agree - 100 quid for an extra 40g on the hardrive seems excessive (top end processors 2.2ghz are available on either now - but you can get the 2.0ghz processor on the white one saving you around 200 quid - crappy optical drive too).

I'm not very practical :D I think Rocketman gets me :D

I may wander up to the Apple Store tonight, see if they have any 16GB iPhones as well to REALLY wind Ed up :D

I love mine now. It's the best smart phone I've ever used and has bailed me out in so many different ways now that I've lost all sense of critical faculty. Weirdly, I seldom use it as an iPod, but as a communication tool and way to keep on top of business, it's now essential.

I am disappointed they didn't cut prices on the 8GB model today, though, as making a large cap version available isn't enough to stimulate the UK market, which is so very price conscious. Expect price cut next month, to clear stock for 3G iPhone in April*, just before Japanese launch.

* = Speculation

Because I don't have one? ;)

then get a macbook air.
cos you want one not out of necessity and you can afford the luxury.
it's a crap machine with no optical drive.
thin yea, i wonder how did it go with drop test. :hmm:

I'd go "wow!" at the phone, quickly followed by a loud guffaw when I think how much you've paid for it and the price/length of your contract!

:D

I'll tell you what my phone bill was when I was in Oz next time I see you... I'll make sure you're leaning against something/have some support :D

I wouldn't touch the mac air with a bargepole. It's a hunk of shite as far as I can see unless you are actually nathan barley*. In that case it would be ideal.

*there's a little bit of barley in all of us...

But what do you want to actually use it for?

Just get a White MacBook and stick lots of RAM in it and bingo!

Black is nice, Silver is nice but a white one never looks dated. Had mine for coming up to 1.5years and with the exception of the odd wipe over with a dry cloth have never had to really clean it. The polycarbonate casing wears well. If you get a black one the scratches show up pretty quickly.

But at the end of the day what do you really want it to do? :)

I just got a 15" Macbook Pro instead :)

Then I read about an Apple announcement in the pipeline, fuckers :D

There's always an announcement in the pipeline (although this one is probably the iphone SDK) - and you don't want to go buying brand new model macs, in case there's bugs in the first batch.

There'll almost certainly be a MacBook Pro with the newer processors at the end of the month. They've just scheduled a special launch event for then - there's a chance that it'll be iphone 3g, but my money's on an upgraded macbook pro, with cooler running processors and improved multitouch trackpad.

Hardly a worry about buying a new model in this case - the powerbook/macbook pro's a long established design. It's tinkering rather than marked changes and the addition of a cooler running smaller processpor is unlikely to cause problems.
