Which is the more serious offence...

Can anyone actually verify this?

I've just had a shufty through policies for the RAC, Royal Sun Alliance & Insure.co.uk & MOT is in all of them. Under the "Roadworthieness" heading/requirement. Tax is covered by more arguable language but the insurers seem to limit it to RTA-minimum only for 3rd parties.

I've got an NIG policy somewhere as well but digging through my badly-needing tidied box of old paperwork is sapping my will to live! :D

Giles..

Please your fucking self, get a magnifying glass and look at the small print on ANY car/motorcycle insurance policy.

I'll check mine tonight. I'm pretty sure that it's the case that non-MOT'd cars are de facto uninsured but I'm not so sure about tax. I did once have an untaxed car nicked and the insurance company paid out (they didn't question whether or not it was taxed) but that was about 10 years ago.

I wonder what happens if your car is SORN - you could still be insured, and therefore covered in the case of a theft (surely???) but you would have no need for tax/MOT.

If sorn'd your car's paperwork would still be in order so you would be covered for theft etc (where was a comp or TPFT policy) & RTA-minimum whilst offroad, where tax & an MOT are not applicable. Some other aspects of the policy may not be active in this situation.

One of the policies I read last night (prob RAC, it was the clearest by far) spelled-out exactly this aspect of cover in great detail. :o I was surprised to see that even on a comp policy, quite an amount of cover was not applied offroad.

I should add that theft insurance is considered an add-on & not part of the Road Traffic Act requirements. They only require you to have sufficent insurance for immediade emergency treatment/services & cover for any damage/injury you might inflict on third parties.

Theft-only insurance is not uncommon for long-term stored vehicles or the likes of classic vehicles that are shown but not driven anymore.
