Which is the largest English city....

Hmmm... population 184,000; Plymouth population 250,000.

I remain to be convinced by either case, though -- although Plymouth are winning so far. (Which would make a change, probably).

I remember checking this out at the end of last season when it looked possible that Hull would be relinquishing the record and came up with the answer that it was indeed Plymouth. It seems on further reserach tho that Hull might not have held the record anyway as there is a larger city than Hull, which has a football club, and quite a well known one, which has not been in the top flight!!!!:D

wakefield? didn't realise that was a city tbf, all the others on that list above hull, apart from Belfast and Glasgow have been in the top division afaik

Found out some corking facts while delving further.

Anyone like to have a guess at these 2.

1. Whic is the samllest place in UK to have had a top division side?

2. Which team has a stadium which has a higher capacity than the population of the town they play in?

And for a laugh found this comment

The smallest to make the big time is Torquay, although its club, Manchester United, pulls its support from all over Devon and, strangely, Surrey.

.... and while we're at it,

3. Which is the only English football ground to have been bombed by Zeppelins? :)

Some great non-league names about that Glossop NE have been playing recently;

Pegasus Juniors
Atherton Collieries
Calverton Miners Welfare
Runcorn Linnets
Nelson
Squires Gate
Sporting Khalsa :D

I thought to answer to Q2. could have been Forest Green Rovers (they play in a little town called Nailsworth) but the towns population is about 1000 more. Can't think what it could be! Getting annoyed now...

I guess. According to Wikipedia they're from Holloway which has a population of 11,000 odd... could just argue they're from London. Most clubs could claim to be from the district of the city they're from as the population of the district will likely to be less than the stadium especially premiership teams...

Scrap the second question as it seems i have been misinformed by t'internet! Sorry folks. I bet there is one somewhere tho.

i was going with wigan but thats 95,000 pop.

I reckon its going to be a northern ex mining/industrial town though.

Lame! its no one.

In Germany TSG 1899 Hoffenheim have surprised everyone by swiftly making their way from the lower reaches of the German leagues and threatening to win the Bundesliga this season. (They were in the 5th tier in 2000)

Their ground which opened in January has a capacity of 30,000, and the village of Hoffenheim has a population of just over 3,000.

Madness! Does this count? Do I win?

actually they were originally from Woolwich, south of the river, and moved up to their current home about 80 years ago

True but the question was asking about the town they play in which is now Holloway, apparently.

it's not a town, neither is woolwich tbf, they are both areas in London

Bath is a fairly big place never to have had a league team (apart from when Rovers played there) is it the biggest city never to have had a league team?

Forest Green are my local team - ground is tiny

Argyle rule :)

I admit I'm no expert concerning football but can someone explain to me please why Liverpool has two teams in the Premiership whilst Bristol, pretty much the same size, hasn't had one since 1980?

Not sure, Gloucester's bigger. Also St Albans, Salisbury and a few others.
Probably the nicest city never to be in the league!

Edit: in fact it could be Wakefield - not only the biggest city never to have a top flight team but also a league team full stop!
