Which is primary: The one or the multiple?

Posing a primary ontological question here (which is increasingly relevant to contemporary continental philosophy, as in the debate between Deleuze and Badiou)-- is being at base "one" (univocal, unified, singular) or "multiple" (a multiplicity which only appears as a one due to an operation)?

My eyes just sort of flashing over your name, it looked like 'long kelp'.
