Which is more "Brixton" - west or east of the A23

Now LOOK, you. We're trying to show Minxy and Orang the rudiments of map reading, so stop confusing the issue with all this philosophical malarky. I know you're doing it on purpose. :p :D

Next time you take the wrong exit off the north circular you won't be going, "oh but hey, maps are just an oppressive capitalist construct to stifle our imagination, maaan." :p

All I'm trying to get at is that maps are an entirely arbitrary way of presenting the world. For instance:

Why should north be at the top of maps? Up for most of us is perpendicularly into space, down into the centre of the earth.

Why should maps be centred on western Europe rather than, for instance, the international dateline in the middle of the Pacific?

There's a very good episode of The West Wing ('Somebody's going to emergency, somebody's going to jail') that explains this in an amusing way:

You stay here and put it all into plain English for me. English that a 5 year-old would understand preferably :o

'Up the hill towards the Windmill' makes a lot more sense to me than 'go south along the A23'! :)

Unless you're using a map....

Ok how about up Brixton hill? Once you get to Brixton hill you'll be able to see which way it runs. If you arrive at the top of it you'll already be where you want to be, if you're at the bottom you simply go uphill. ;)

Now you see, I'm with the hairy one on this. To me, going up the Hill would mean North :o

Yes, but if brains were made of dynamite, you wouldn't have enough to blow your hat off. :p :D

SW2;small town on the way to Brighton....
SW9;home to the world famous Brixton Market.....the beating heart of Brixton.....

That's very true, but I never claimed to be clever. Indeed, I'm lacking in the common sense and intellect departments. :o :D

PS: I don't wear hats :p
