Everyone on TV seems to be obsessing about 14th century society in the last few weeks, and I think that this modern postcode distinction may not get to the root of it.
In the middle ages, all the land west of the London-Brighton road was in the well- organised feudalism of Stockwell
manor,
Article - who moved Stockwell
whereas east of the road were the chaotic Lambeth and Lambeth Wick manors. (Just don't ask about Myatts Fields, where the manor of Milkwell was half in Lambeth and half in Camberwell, and they had boundary disputes for a couple of centuries!)
So are all those on the west of Brixton still forelock-tuggers, whereas their eastern counterparts are all radical successors to the revolting Wat Tyler?
