Over all, basic. But this time of year rosemary, then thyme, both of which we have growing outside the kitchen door.

Coriander, though, is a vile weed, and should be eradicated.

Bay, followed by thyme and rosemary.
The square I live in has been renovated and they've planted some rosemary bushes - is it a bad thing to use these?

I'm not sure how well it'll work in winter, since it's hardly rosemary-sprouty-growing season, but Rosemary's really easy to grow from cuttings.

You can snip off a branch, then pop it into a glass with enough water to cover the non leafy bit, and leave for a couple of weeks to let it grow roots.

If you're feeling lazy, I've successfully grown new rosemary plants just by popping a sprig of rosemary into a small compost pot, and keeping it well watered.

I've currently got a load of rosemary plants growing very well, which were grown from a pack of Sainsburys fresh rosemary sprigs, already chopped off the bush

Seems I'm not the only one who doesn't know the difference between a herb and a spice. I've asked before, and Googled, but still had no satisfactory answer. My only good answer is that The Herb Girls probably wouldn't have got to number one, so it's something to do with chart hits.
Also Dune would have been a bit of a drugs allegory if they had all been fighting over "The Herb" :D

I use a lot of dill - fantastic herb. Even better if mixed with German Mustard. Also lots of rosemary if making roast spuds. Pretty fond of Herbes de Provence for general use (Thyme, Basil, Oregano, Bay leaf, lavender, parsley) as well.

Thyme, but only because it grows in my window box. It would be parsley if only I could grow it instead of it dying every single time I try.

If you can grow parsley, it's the woman who wears the trousers in your house, according to my Granny (god rest her soul). Suffice it to say, we can't kill the stuff off. :D

There are decorative bay tree varieties though. I think only a smattering are properly edible.

Probably coriander here, although I get through a lot of bay, oregano and thyme too. However I probably get through more fresh coriander than anything else.

Parsley's not that difficult to grow is it? Takes ages to germinate, but it's a fairly reliable plant ime, particularly the curly variety. Needs a fair bit of space than you realise perhaps.

Rarely use sage but thyme, rosemary, bay, mint and marjoram are permanent fixtures in the garden and I have been known to buy parsley and coriander from a shop!

Not sure how well it'll grow in a window box.

We just let the damn thing go to seed and left it there. Next spring, and every other since, lots of little shooties over an increasing spread of the garden. Lovely smell when you cut the grass as well ;-)

I wouldn't have thought so, unless everyone else has the same idea!

Rosemary's ace - you can hack bits off it, and forget to water it for months, and the bugger just keeps growing strong. Quality fucking herb is rosemary

When I last made bread I absoloutely smothered it with Rosemary.

mmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

We had a bush in our 'garden' but it went all woody then died

unlucky

i was the worst gardener in the world until last year (when i moved up one notch), and found that rosemary was the only plant i could keep alive given my irresponsible attitude to keeping plants alive

Same experience with my rosemary(s). Two relatively healthy plants died after a few years suddenly. The prostrate rosemary grows so slowly to be pretty much useless bar a few occasions a year. Thankfully the stuff's easily scavenged off gardens on the way home.

The sage and the mint died too. :(

Your mint died? You're either very rubbish or don't own a watering can.
:p
I think I need a new sage plant really. Mine's getting to the too woody stage, partly because I've been a lazy pruner.
