normally ibu, but mrs mag is right, socuble para is well good and gets going much quicker, tastes shite though but i'm sure you could bung a bit of ribena in it

No, of course they didn't, dear. :)

Nope, I'm claiming it's possible to be prescribed them.
GPs are also usually more than happy to prescribe you misoprostol on it's own if you have to take NSAIDs as part of a medication regime.

There's no such thing as "buffered ibuprofen" containing misoprostol, "buffered iburprofen" contains magnesium hydroxide which makes ulceration worse. So kindly don't go posting up misleading medical info which could potentially harm people ok?

If there isn't now, there certainly was when I was diagnosed with a gastric ulcer in 1994, and ibuprofen was my GP's NSAID of choice (daft cow).

If there's "no such thing", how could it harm anyone, even potentially, hmmm?

Stick that in your pipe and smoke it , you sententious eye-rolling prig! :p

why don't you ever hear of people overdosing on ibuprofen? it doesn't mention it on the wikipdia page that it's particularly liver-toxic either, not that that is my most reliable source of knowledge.

here, i think i am right:
http://wiki.answers.com/Q/Can_Ibupr...he_liver_when_you_are_taking_it_for_arthritis

"it can cause ulcers or GI bleeding, but liver function is not normally something that is impacted by ibuprofen."

When I was prescribed it many moons ago the info sheet always made a point that sustained use and/or overdose could be hepatotoxic. Not as definitely dangerous as paracetamol, but bad nonetheless.

Paracetamol/ibuprofen and (dihydro)codeine of course! OTC and pretty cheap from Boots... not "too" bad for helping with sore joints etc etc :)

Tbh I mostly buy them to CWE though, and end up spinning out some story about how I get migraines some mornings and should go on holiday in the sun... which is slightly bullshit (well, the holiday would be nice!), but seems to happen every time I am eyed over by a pharmacy type... :p :D

Oi this the entry-level painkiller thread, no codeine allowed! Obviously if it wasn't I'd choose morphine and ketamine, or maybe a general anaesthetic.:D

Oxycontin, which i am on right now.

IMO its an amazing painkiller.

its the coke i gave up forever. I still take some other drugs - for example oxy - mainly for pain.

 bad cheesy, noooooooo, don't take oxycontin. It's a stupid drug and should be banned.

Really depends upon you and what you want them for.

All generic drugs are the SAME in core ingredient as a proprietry brand, so no need to waste pounds on neurophen when 35p generic ibuprofen is available.

They work in different ways.

Paracetamol based (inc co-codamol - paracetamol + codeine) are good for a cold as they will bring your temperature down quickly.

Ibuprofen based are good for muscle pains and are an effective anti-imflammatory

Asprin can be good for a hangover if in soluble form as it will work quickly.

Horses for courses though innit

A friend of mine is a surgeon, and she told me about a young woman who came to her for a caesarian section who had had a liver transplant. She was in her mid twenties. My friend needed to know the medical history, and discovered that the reason for the liver transplant was that the young woman was scared of dentists, so had taken paracetamol regularly for toothache. Apparently, it can destroy your liver after a surprisingly short time of consistent use!

My friend was telling me this story not because I take painkillers too easily, but because I am scared of dentists. Clearly, the liver transplant was much worse than the fillings or whatever the woman ended up having to have!

I voted paracetamol purely on the basis that it's the only one available in generic form with codeine. I usually have to pay for branded aspirin or ibuprofen with codeine.

Hmmm. You may say that Miss Caphat, but I disagree as it is the ONLY (non heroin) painkiller I have ever experienced that can really kill severe pain and knock it on the head.

obviously users need to be very careful & not abuse it.
