which bands' second album was their best?

Orbital - errr, did their second album have a name? It was fucking good though :)

Hole-live through this was far better than pretty on the inside...although someone seems to have stolen my copy as wished to play it to wake me up :( Oh well, bikini Kill it is then,...

Asking For It is a good track, but I really am not too fond Courtney Love.

The Clash . . . "Give 'Em Enough Rope", much better than their eponymous first album, sees them getting into their stride as serious musicians.

imho of course!
i recal you mentioning this (I think) during thre great 'greatest clash album' devbate...thought it was weird then, but it takes all sorts!

I dunno if Porno for Pyro's or Julian Cope (or some of the others) count in a way, cos they might be the second album by that particular line up, but not of the artists iyswim. & I thought bandwagonesque was the fannies' third album....

otherwise.. a few corkers in here, tho its hard to decide if Heaven up Here is better than Crocodiles or not.

Completly agree

Iv'e always thought Give 'Em Enough Rope is the best Clash record

my first album will consist of the left over crap I've written for my first album, and save the good ones for the second album.

the first one is truly shit.

the first album will get deleted just before the release of the second album. because the second one will be a work of genius, everyone will be very quick to try and claim to have been into me since my days when I toured the small clubs up and down the country. Luckily I will have most of the copies of the first one and stick them on ebay and make lots of money.

Then of course the first will get reissued, everyone will buy it, cos the second is quite possibly the best album ever made ever, and I'll make lots more money :)

I'll have loads of drugs/groupies/adoration and fail to live up to the hype and the third album will be covers of carpenters tunes :(

LOL @ tanky :D :D

will you have a big house in the country full of flunkies and sex dwarves carrying trays full of drugs around the place?

can i get a "thank you" on your sleeve notes please? :)

we will live in the best mansion with the best sex dwarves and drugs :)

I'll probably get round to thanking you on the sleeve notes of the third album :(

The Smiths - 'Meat Is Murder' (discounting 'Hatful Of Hollow' for being a compilation, brilliant though it is)

Supergrass - 'In It For The Money'

Portishead - 'Portishead'
Massive Attack - 'Protection' (it must be a Bristle thing)

Neneh Cherry - 'Homebrew'

Dr & The Medics - 'I Keep Thinking It's Tuesday' (no, really - solid gold buried treasure)

:)

The first album by a band is often an effective compilation of the songs they've stored up over the years leading to it, meaning the second is usually a lot more focused and spontaneous while still retaining the energy and hunger of an act's early years.

Even though it was actually their third, 'Black And White' by The Stranglers is my favourite (honourary) second album of all time; the band had so much material from the pre-album years that it took the first two to get it all out of the collective system.

I'd be interested to see the result of a poll about best third albums, as they're legendarily where most bands become unstuck...

Rocket From The Crypt - Circa Now

yes, awesome album. Much better than the later cheesier stuff.

also have to mention Trail of Dead here. Madonna is a great improvement on the first one, and also better than Source Tags and Codes and the last one.

some people who arguably did best with their 2nd album

boards of canada
wire
gang of four
velvet underground
joy division
prefuse 73
pixies
pavement
suede
black dice

(With the possible exception of Pixies, as I'm not sure if you're counting 'Come On Pilgrim' as an album...?)

I reckon that's cos most people probably hae the CD with Surfa Rosa and Come on Pilgrim on together, and hence think of them as one album...
