Which band/artist's biggest hit was nothing like the rest of their songs?

I can't make up my mind about this being very different from Sparks everyday stuff. Brilliant though.

Have you actually heard anything by sparks ever? In fact, has anyone on this thread either heard anything other than the song by the band they mindlessly list or thought about the thread's rubric?

I would argue that Isn't she Lovely isnt a bad pop song but am biased as its my first memory of hearing music as a child. Also the question is about 'biggest hit'. Even I am too young to remember how popular Isnt she Lovely was at the time but 'I just called to say I love you' was number 1 and everywhere when it came out. Total shite and yet IMO Stevie was a true musical genius.

hes done loads of sentimental gloop. e.g "isn't she lovely?"

ZZ Top - Viva Las Vegas...reached No 10 in the UK, same as Gimme All Your Lovin so it's an equal biggest hit. And ok, it's not 'nothing like' the rest of their output, just a bit different and just not as good. ;)

I was just listening to this corker:

Everyone know Groove Is In The Heart, but listen to their album World Clique and you’ll find it’s not very representative of their sound overall.
They were quite an arty band of which a fraction of their output was commercially appealing. Same with Kid Creole & The Coconuts

That was the B side to groove is in the heart. I hated it. . . But I must have played it a few times as i am very familiar with it. Everyone liked the 'ooh la la la la la la' bit. Maybe this track softened people up for the dreadful album.

It was also a single before that. Think it’s their first. I really like the album!

I have no idea who or what they are and suspect I have little desire to find out.

Golden Brown - The Stranglers

Probably their biggest hit and didn't sound like anything else they did.
Well that's simply not true at all. Biggest hit maybe, but there are loads of stranglers tracks that are similar or even more 'light and frilly'.

Any other Stranglers tracks with a harpsichord? Loads are there?
Did I say there were loads of Stranglers tracks with harpsichord? Is that all that makes this song different from their other tracks for you? I don't think it is.
I would argue that this (another single from the same album) is even 'less strangelersy' than how your man on the street might imagine a 'stranglers sound'.

My point is that Golden Brown is musically and tonally not wildly out of line with their general output.

. . .and how different is it really from strange little little girl which was another big hit.

Or even this

Doesn't the opening post asks if their biggest hit was nothing like the rest of their songs?

When Golden Brown was released as a single it was nothing like their previous stuff. The fact that a lot of future recordings were similar is irrelevant.

Yes, Don't kill the whale.
Absolutely nothing like Roundabout, Siberian Khatru etc. That came before it

I know Hugh and Burnell were fighting at this point, but I wish Hugh sung this. His voice is so much better and would have packed more punch. JGs vocal is thin and weak.
I don’t know. It’s a gossamer light tune so I think the near whispered vocal works well. The tune reminds me of a long overnight coach trip to Amsterdam, discreetly smoking a hash pipe on the back seat at 2am while everyone else snored.

Wikipedia tells me that Goldfinger was their biggest UK hit, and I'd argue that Kung Fu and Girl From Mars are probably their best known songs.

Oh I misread the thread wrong; Candy was indeed the about the sixth single from their best selling album.

Since we're coming up to that time of year again, how about East 17? "Stay Another Day" as their only UK number 1, but not really like any of their other singles, even the pseudo-ballads. Compare and contrast:
