Which are the best oven chips?

Eh? Any pan would work surely. Don't overfill and perhaps don't use a flimsy thing from the pound shop, but you can deep fry in pretty much anything.

Of course, but once you start frying chips in a pan, it becomes the chip pan and ends up being full of stinking fat and being a fire hazard. I don't have a chip pan because I don't want one.

Moomoo - did you ever get the hang of potato wedges? I've had tham a zillion times since the thread on here :D Piss-easy and idiot-proof

I can't stand the smell of frying in the house either. It sticks to stuff (obviously) and it really haunts me and winds me up :(

Sauteeing is OK though

^^ I'm also like this and I hate air freshners - end up with a really cold kitchen so try not to fry

Not read thread, but I think Aunt Bessies are like old chippy chips. :)

THE BEST :)

Someone up there ^^ says that the recipe has changed and they are shit now :(

I haven't noticed

Those chunky Aunt Bessie's ones are very nice. They're not amazing, but they beat all the other oven chips.

Oven chips are never going to be amazing but until they are auntie is the way to go :D

The trick is definitely to cook them for longer than they say on the pack isn't it.
I find this is the case. They can take up to twice as long as it says on the pack. This might be cos they tend to need a high temp and my oven takes a while to reach it.

Recipies:

Honeyed Oven chips:

1. Preheat the oven to 200C/400F/Gas 6.
2. Cut the potatoes into chip-sized pieces. Mix together the honey, thyme and garlic in a bowl. Whisk in the olive oil and coat the potatoes well in the mixture. Season, place on a baking tray and cook in the oven for 35-45 minutes.

4 tbsp clear honey
1 tsp fresh thyme
1 clove garlic, chopped
4 tbsp olive oil

:)
That sounds like a lovely recipe . . . . . for roast potatoes!

Tried some McCains "Gorgeous" Oven Chips today, and for an oven chip they are rather splendid (if expensive). Must be the beef dripping they contain

Agreed, the dripping makes them smell great too. :)

Not safely you can't.
That's like saying it's impossible to drive safely because thousands of people die in road traffic accidents every year.

If you are competent you can do many 'dangerous' things safely... and if you're incompetent or unlucky even 'safe' things can injure or kill you.

there's a mccain oven chip which is really chunky and is coated witha mixture of sunflower oil and beef dripping it comes in silver foil thick bags - farmfoods had them a week or two ago for usual farmfood bargain prices

edited to say the ones rhod mentions above

I know Herbs, I just couldn't be bothered.

The idea that a pan can't be used to heat oil safely is inherently ridiculous. It's perhaps best avoided if you can, for health reasons if nothing else, but it's not a particularly lethal kitchen process for a competent, attentive cook.

Coming back from the pub pissed and fancying some chips is another matter.
:D

Some oven chips taste chemically, I got some from Iceland once, and when eating them one time, I wondered if I had rinsed the oven walls of oven cleaner, but it was the chips.
I try and stik to macain or mad aunt bessies.
