land cruiser seems to haven taken over from the landrover:(
forget the ford outside of the states gas guzzler badly made and no parts its designed for America nieghour had one for awhile huge but strangely no extra room like a reverse tardis:confused:
stay away from MOD surplus landys while you may get one thats never been used you may get one thats totally trashed or has weird electrics more for hobbyists.

I would get a Lexus, they are lovely. Our neighbour has one, but the downside is the fuel. They go all over Essex taking their kids to footie and they reckon they are putting in about £250 a month!

Landrover - good off road but uncomfortable on the road

Toyota Landcruiser - good off road but poor suspension compared to the Landrover when off road, probably better than the Landrover on the road and has a good engine

Depends which model Landcruiser. The proper, well-hard 75-78 series is brilliant off road and naff on the road IME (in NZ). The 100-series and up are as you say-softened and tarted up for families.

I can only go by my future father-in-law who spent years in the bush in Zim. He curses whenever he sees a Landrover, saying the fuckers nearly killed him in the bush through breakdowns. He owns a Hilux these days to tootle around in. Maybe the new Landrovers are better, but Toyota is still the choice of African militia.

I saw that Top Gear but I don't think they make them like that anymore.

I want to buy new ideally as then I don't run the risk of buying one that has been messed around.

Where I am common parts such as brake pads and tyres are available easily for the Landrover and Landcruiser but most other parts have to be purchased in Europe or South Africa and shipped in.

I am not sure about parts for the F250 - there are a few of them about here - but I have been unable to buy tyres for my Toyota Dyna van so had to buy them in South Africa and ship them up in a container.

IIRC Clarkson ripped the arsehole off the Ford F250, even though it had everything he loved (large engine, fuel-hungriness, V-engine purr). He reckoned every one he tried had about 2 inches of play in the steering (scary if you're going to be bouncing around a bit, but not so bad if you stay on proper roads).

Wheeled vehicles are soo 20th century :p

It is a shame Citroen do not make a 4x4.

I saw an old Top Gear the other day on our satelite TV and it was going round a racetrack with a film crew. Much smoother ride than the BMW it was competing against.
