Where's the best place to buy a computer?

Oi, fuckoff! And I agreed with you and everything, just back there. :)

Was I excluding myself from that insult?

Would there be a book that I could buy which would help me with all the downloading things and explain problems that may pop up?

I don't want to have to keep asking for help. :(
Why not? If we don't want to waste our valuable time (Hah!) answering then we won't :p

The idiot's guides aren't bad and there seems to be one for every topic under the sun. There's at least a few on "the internetz".

The ubuntu forums are notoriously polite, too.

I managed to get Stig working on Ubuntu fairly quickly - and she now solves her own problems.

What are you trying to say? :(

:p

Thing is, you install Ubuntu, and it won't play MP3s.
I know the reasons, and they're good ones, but this is an absolutely massive stumbling block.

I'm thinking of getting this printer to replace the one they killed.

What do you reckon?

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Epson-Stylu...6?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1183648530&sr=1-4

Seems to do everything except make the tea.

I tell you what I reckon.

I reckon the piece of shit Epson I bought should've lasted more than two ink cartridges before it started pissing fucking ink everywhere. No great loss I suppose, the print quality was appalling.

Bag of fucking shite which was a disappointment cos the Epson I had before it lasted four years, printed great and took some real hammer. It'd still be working now if I hadn't dropped it :(

Morgan has more of the standard shop stuff; Sterling has ex-corporate built to last" stuff....

The HP systems they have been selling recently are pretty good value apparently - I know several folk who have got them & say they are a good spec for the price.

However, don't buy from Morgan if you are going to need much by way of support. Beyond your statutory rights over hardware faults, they are very much a "sell-em, shift-em, sell the next-lot" kind of outfit.

That's odd - Stig's laptop plays mp3's fine.

Though it doesn't play them on websites - probably a blessed relief, as we've not had to listen to the duct tape guy singing...

It probably does you know. i've never tried. it certainly plays youtube noises etc. and it plays mp3s fine in XMMS.

What can't you play, crispy?

I've supported the things for a living, and this is my personal advice:

If you can support it yourself, get a cheap special at Ebuyer/DABS/wherever.

If not, go to Dell.co.uk and for god's sake use the "Small Business" tab rather than the "Home" tab. There's very little that's proprietary in a Dell these days. The only reason that I didn't buy one from them myself is that I'm fussy about exact brands of PSU and video card and shite like that.

I had massive fights with Epson over a Stylus 800, which I'd bought on the strength of the bulletproof performance of Epson dot matrix printers I'd seen used and abused for the previous 15 years.

It was shit. It regularly blocked its inkjets, and had to go back for warranty repair each time (about 3 times). Then, when it did it again a week after the warranty had expired, I had to explain to Epson in words of one syllable what "not of merchantable quality" meant: that got me one more repair, which lasted about another 3 months. At which point it failed again. To their credit, Epson did offer to repair it again, free, but I'd had it with a printer that was unusable for about 50% of the time I'd owned it. I told them exactly which model of HP inkjet printer I was going to go off and buy. That was in 1998. The HP is still serviceable, 9 years later.

And I have never recommended, or bought, another Epson printer since. I couldn't bring myself to.

Erk, really? Licensing problems?

*looks hard at video/audio server PC he's putting together in the living room*

So, if an epson printer is no good - is there one you would recommend? Budget up to about £80 (less if possible).

We haven't had any problems with our Epson Stylus C46. We don't use it loads though.

Moomoo, is there a local Argos? I wouldn't generally recommend there but it can be handy if there is ever any problems(1 yr guarantee), plus you can try it for a couple of weeks and decide if you like a thing.

Duh! I never even gave Argos a thought!

I was thinking of specialist shops - I always forget that Argos sell everything!

Well, I've been impressed with the HP inkjets since I switched to them.

Incidentally, initial cost on an inkjet isn't the main deal: it's printer ink cartridges that will constitute the main outlay over the printer's lifetime.
