Where's nice, seasidey, countrysidey, yet near work?

East or West Sussex?

Reasonable commute into London for decent money,

Nice countryside - South Downs, High Weald, Ashdown forest

Seaside - brighton, eastbourne, white cliffs n stuff

Boat to Dieppe from Newhaven

Easy for Gatwick

Nice market towns, Lewes, Arundel, lots of pretty villages

Nice mix of things I reckon.

Loverly.

Except for braying solicitors in every pub and the fact that it costs a quadrillion mega-pounds for a portaloo.

Surely with lots of IT experience you can get in real easy, no ?

Nope, no degree, and my experience is all vague management stuff, nothing tangible with engineering quals or anything. The ACS (Australian Computer Society) may well not let me in.

Devon's nice, property prices pretty good too... Not sure about jobs mind you, assume there're some in Exeter.

If only I wasn't stuck in this stupid fucking loophole that makes an Aussie visa so difficult for us to get

If you want it enough, make it happen. It's possible.

We're going for a 'mini-break' to the Gower Peninsula to check that area out on the bank holiday weekend, looks really nice

Maybe Cork in the new year. Any prospective move is a way off yet. Years, not months!

The Gower is lovely, although I'm not sure how many IT jobs would be down that way.

You might well be wrong there- Swansea has a large enterprise park on the outskirts and there are several large, high profile companies in the area who may well need IT support

Im sure there was talk. There are also lots of call centres in the area, BT has a large office there( admin etc) and the SA1 development is apparently attracting more investment

Aren't amazon moving to Swansea or summat?

Just a rumour put about by global warming alarmists.

I believe there is an opening for a polyplacophoran and chips van at Oxwich Bay.

Don't think the Chitons have been exploited as a food source.

Chiton and lava bread. mmmm.

We have Amazon in Cork too. :)

There is a jobs market in Swansea.. but it's not as good as Cork's. Only visiting Gower 'cos we can drive, and it's £140 as opposed to £500-odd.

Cardiff does seem a nice option...

jane: I like the rural'ness' of where you suggest, but not sure I could deal with the reduced daylight hours, I get really bad S.A.D.

I was going to suggest Aberdeen.

I'll not bother now.

(sympathies on the SAD front, both my dad and my brother have it)

As Miss Daisy says, a little while back.....

Dorset has fab beaches, great countryside and if you keep away from the main towns, nice peeps and country pubs. Surfing/Kitesurfing etc all over from Hengistbury Head to Weymouth ....

What is your housing budget? Rental £800 pm for a small house I think, £220k to buy. More rural can be cheaper if its in a regenerating town, Gillingham has cheaper housing, not so good for jobs...

That's more than London, ouch! Renting, well, maybe £600/£700 if we're not earning London wages. Buying, probably a max of £175k. 2 bedroom we'd need. Although with the current interest rate situation, we're not interested in buying.

Well, if you want any info about here, let me know.

It is a lovely part of the country.....

I'd go for Hastings Old Town - I love that place, and affordable too. Or, if you don't want to be anywhere near Hastings proper, Fairlight or anywhere out towards Battle. Most unspoilt part of the southeast imho ;)

Chris - having read about the great drought currently going on in Oz I'm not sure it's somewhere anyone would want to move to right now!

Back to batting for Exeter... ;)

Someone said about nightclubs?! There's a few - mostly for the pissed up alcopops market. But there's the Velvet Lounge which is a bit more 'upmarket' and the Phoenix Centre has loads of 'events' happening. Plus a fair few decent pubs n'ting.

Rental prices are (for an ex-Londoner) pretty darn good. Our place costs £675 per month - it's unfurnished (most places are down here), 2 bed Victorian terrace a 15 min walk from the centre of town, big back yard, large bedrooms, stripped wood floors, period features yadda yadda. Basically, a lovely pad :) If you have transport and are prepared to live a little further out then you could get something cheaper.

It's lovely having the Quayside here to hang out during the Summer, nice cycle rides down along the river to Topsham (where I'd buy a house if I ever won a LOT of money!), nearest beach is Exmouth (20 min drive) which isn't the best - but it's so big you can always find enough space.

Oh - and the thing I've noticed? That pretty much every day, without fail, I leave the office on time and get an hour for lunch. Which, after working in London for bloody years, is very sweet indeed! :D

(PS but Cork and Kerry are very nice too - although ridiculously hilly!)
