...the only reason the left continues is because the leadership of these organisations have invested a lot of time and effort into their careers and can't change at this late juncture.

Would it not be a kindness if Jobcentre Plus and a local enterprise company was to organise a trainng programme for these people? Many of them have experience of newspapers - maybe John Menzies Distribution could give them jobs, after retraining of course.
