Where Were You When Thatcher Got Dumped?

And how many of those grins everyone saw faded when it bacame apparent that their tactic of ditching Maggie was working and that the tories would be re-elected again?

Going into a PG history seminar at Durham Uni when the admittedly left wing Dr/ tutor chap bounded in & announced that Thatcher had gone, and with a grin on his face handed out sherry all round :D

I was leading a group talking about myths and fairy stories. The students came back from coffee with the news. I said, given the topic we were dealing with, I should lead the group in 'Ding. dong, the wicked witch is dead!'

Politically it would have been better if she'd stayed, but the Pleasure Principle took over, I'm afraid.

And we've had over a decade to soberly reflect upon that at leisure. The troubel was that whilst Thatcher was discredited, Thatcerism wasn't - and no government since has dared to break from it's doctrines. No prospective governemnt even pretends to go against this or offer anything remotely differeing from it.

Remember that all the criticism of Thatcher and then Major's government came to be limited to arguing that their government's were incompetant. Nevr wrong or unjust - just not very good at what they were doing. The logic that came with this argument was that what was needed was effective rightwing government that did it's job more competantly. This is what the whole "New Labour" thing was about from the start.

I was in the bar at University, getting paralytically drunk and shouting "Maggie, Maggie, Maggie .... Gone, Gone, Gone!" :o

That night Billy Bragg was doing a gig in Dublin in a theatre. The set from the day show was still there with a little hill at the back. He kept running up on top of it, jumping up and down and bellowing 'this is maggies bunker this is'.
