Where to start with Prog - old and new?

those focus and tarkus vids are hilarious..proof they didnt all take themselves as seriously as rick "church of england" wakeman did..

that caravan you tube track is pure class..the prog zombies..middle class english duende..:)

im a bit of a sucker for the choir boy vocals of the canterbury scene so id start there cos well, thats where it started..soft machine, caravan(early stuff only unless you like jazz fret wanking)...solo stuff by robert wyatt(amazing artist)...to a lesser extent kevin ayers.a few of his tracks hold up..hugh hopper went straight into jazz i beleive..

hatfield and the north are a later canterbury band well worth hearing..

slapp happy have a lighthearted feel with fantastic singer dagmar krause.

henry cow are an early prog band that were on the experimental side of things.

re any current bands doing this style..impressive zine ptolemaic terrascope used to cover this stuff, not sure if its still going..

Gong
the mars volta
at the drive in
alot of mike pattons solo stuff (mr bungle etc)
opeth (more black metal but with obvious jazz/prog influences)
Tool? *runs

wtf is prog anyway...

If you're into experimental stuff, then there are 3 ex Soft Machine records which are just exceptional.
Robert Wyatt - The End of An Ear
Kevin Ayers - Shooting at the Moon
Hugh Hopper - 1984

Been listening to Pure Reason Revolution and Mew who are both excellent. Never heard of them before about 2 hours ago.

If you think Rick Wakeman take shimself that seriously you really don't know him that well.

When I think about it, all my favourite records are borderline prog rock. Bands that invite you into their own peculiar world. Early Soft Machine, Hawkwind, Krautrock (my favourites include Can, Faust, early Kraftwerk, Annexus Quam, Kluster/Cluster, Amon Duul 1&2) have been mentioned. I'm not sure if they are prog rock as such but they were doing unusual stuff in the early 70's. Prog rock can tend towards being clever for the sake of being clever, and that can be fun but its tiresome after a while. Most of the 'must have' records fall into this category. There are some real gems though, which are not so much 'must have' but rather 'once you have it, you would sooner lose your right arm than lose this record.'

ZNR - Barricade 3
Heldon - Interface
Hatfield & The North - Rotters Club
Tortoise - Millions Now Living Will Never Die
Magma - Mechanik Destructiw Kommandou
Tortoise had one track I heard that was utterly awesome; something about glass houses (!). But I couldn't get into anything else of theirs i'd heard.

I don't believe I did. I believe i merely clarified my position re: Genesis.

:D

I do believe you refered to my suggestions as "all disgusting", which is not particularly friendly or helpful. Niether is it accurate, you might not like them but others might (just as I find everything genesis have ever recorded as offensive). Luckily I do not loose any sleep over cheap insults from cyber warriors.

Fuck me, you're one oversensitive fucker, aren't you?

I find them disgusting, and i'm entirely entitled to think that and post that, as much as you are to disagree. Might I suggest you get the fuck over yourself? :)

Yeah, yeah I know.

haterz leave ----->

I want epic songs, weird time structures (preferably as many different ones in one song as possible), pretentious and obtuse lyrics, layers and layers of keyboards and drum solos.

Give me the "must haves" from the old guard and some examples of good contemporary stuff which could fall into the "prog" bracket.

Thanks.

Fucking hell you don't like Rick Wakeman too...no wonder you're anti Oi if ya like mind numbing shite like that!

Was it? You should try using smilies in that case because it wasn't clear.

The Internet does not allow us to see each other's faces (unless we use webcams) or read each other's body language. Hence, one person's joke is another person's "what the fuck"?

you really think my awareness of prog would be so fucking shallow that I'd believe it could only be accurately pinpointed by the wearing of capes?

I heard someone on Planet Rock describe Kansas as "prog" the other day. Kansas? Prog? No!

Their first couple of albums are most certainly prog & IIRC (been years) Point of no return & Monolith are pretty-much bog-standard concept albums. After that, yes they headed into more conventional rock band territory.

Then there was the member who kept popping-up in collaboration with Steve Hackett for a while. :D
