Where to start with Prog - old and new?

OK, so we've had Yes, VdGG, Asia, ELP...ermmm, Budgie maybe? Certainly Rush...

Modern prog...Battles. I missed them at Glasto (stupidly went to see Mahoosive Attack instead), but they do some weird time stuff, lots of influences from C20th classical...

D'You know I must confess that in the 70's and 80's I saw quite a few of the bands mentioned, e.g. Caravan, Camel, Gong and Stackridge but I have no recollection of what they sounded like  (and, no, it wasn't because of over indulgence in drink or drugs! :D )

Another genre that has passed me by...

Can and Neu! I know of, but haven't listened to.

Where do I go from here?

Harmonia's "Musik von Harmonia" is good listening, as are Tangerine Dream's first half-dozen albums ("Phaedra" being about the easiest to get into). Ash Ra Tempel's "Schwingungen" is also great if you like wiggy acid blues.

When I think about it, all my favourite records are borderline prog rock. Bands that invite you into their own peculiar world. Early Soft Machine, Hawkwind, Krautrock (my favourites include Can, Faust, early Kraftwerk, Annexus Quam, Kluster/Cluster, Amon Duul 1&2) have been mentioned. I'm not sure if they are prog rock as such but they were doing unusual stuff in the early 70's. Prog rock can tend towards being clever for the sake of being clever, and that can be fun but its tiresome after a while. Most of the 'must have' records fall into this category. There are some real gems though, which are not so much 'must have' but rather 'once you have it, you would sooner lose your right arm than lose this record.'

ZNR - Barricade 3
Heldon - Interface
Hatfield & The North - Rotters Club
Tortoise - Millions Now Living Will Never Die
Magma - Mechanik Destructiw Kommandou

It's very cruel recommending Magma to anyone without giving them a weirdness alert. I've watched people go insane trying to work out what the lyrics are saying. :D

Swarfega did ask for obtuse lyrics. There's nothing more obtuse than lyrics in a made up language. :D

I'm never sure what level of weirdness people can take.

I like Rush, Floyd, Porcupine Tree, Mars Volta, King Crimson, Cardiacs, Oceansize, Amplifier

However.....Dream Thearter are utter utter shit, just geeks who would work in music shops if they hadn't formed that awful fucking band avoid at all costs.

Just had a thought about some of the 80s King Crimson albums which people have been praising on here.

When I've heard some of the 'math rock' bands recently, "Discipline" and "Red" have both immediately come to mind .... all those polyrhythms. Certainly when I heard Foals' "Antidotes" for the first time, I immediately thought of "Three of a Perfect Pair".

new genesis box-set is pretty fucking good, btw. one for the crimbo lists peeps (even if you have to buy it for y'self :().

I can't actually imagine listening to any in this day and age but way back when I used to like Egg a great deal. I'd also suggest Colloseum, Curved Air, Kevin Ayres, Procol Harum, The Nice and possibly Traffic.
