Where to live near London....

Yeah, but then you don't have to admit to living in south london.... ;)

Where's cheap, not too dodgy and with good nightbus access to central london in south london?

I'd be embarrassed to say I lived in North London.. there's kind of a mutual respect when two South Londoners meet... no matter what their differences in life, there's a shared look of brother or sisterhood when you say "I, friend, am from Penge" ;)

Depends how you define good nightbus access!

I'm in Zone 3 South London and it's about 1 hour from Oxford Circus. Not remotely dodgy, either.

:D

Good nightbus access to me, is 30-45 minutes from a central part of london, like Trafalagar Sq or Oxford Circus or something.

Doesn't really matter to me as I never, ever go out in the West End. The very thought makes my balls retract a bit. But then most of my mates are located around the south, so my life's focus is around there.

If you happen upon a driver that goes recklessly fast it can be as little as 20mins to Brixton from Trafalgar Square, and West Norwood, West Dulwich, Gypsey Hill, Crystal Palace and the likes are only a short distance further along some of those bus routes.

I'm almost always out in central London. My mates are scattered all over the place. Plus some from out of London, who travel in occasionally.

That, and I'm a yuppie... :o

aye, but dull=quiet=cheap

The idea of anywhere in London being described as 'cheap' always raises a cynical laugh with me, but yes, it's a lot less expensive than Greenwich, and about the same price as Woolwich whilst being less unattractive and a lot less rough, and reasonably well connected, although it's an hour from central London on a nightbus. If you want to live in this part of the world it's a fair compromise.

well i was paying £360 for a massive room, which wasn't that much more than i would pay in glasgow.

the 53 night bus takes about 45 mins too :)

Really? I don't know Glasgow, but I could get far more flat for the money I pay now, and a far nicer area in, say, Leeds or Manchester. I could do better than I do now for less than half the money if I still lived in Hull.

On a very good night indeed - and you have to get to Whitehall to pick it up. It's rarely less than 50 minutes IME.

True, but surely you must appreciate that you have a Hull fetish, as it were. You had great times there that made you love the place.

As a neutral, comparing Hull with everything that London has to offer is just ridiculous. Although of course different strokes for different folks.

I've had a frustrating evening, I'm in a bad mood and I regretted that post as soon as I'd made it, so let's not have this argument again! :o :)

Awww, but it's my favourite urban argument! Actually, maybe a close second to arguing with Tarannau about food and computers ;)

In all honesty, I do have real sympathy for you. It's no fun not being where you want to be, and even less so when you have to pay a fortune for a privelege you don't even want. I suppose I just wish I could show you what everyone else loves so much so that your time here is happy and you come to love it. Like when you hear a wicked tune, see a wicked film, or read a wicked book, you want others to appreciate it.

The interesting thing is, a fair proportion of my close friends have either liked London and then become sick of it, or have never really liked it but tolerate it because they need to work here. Most of them tolerate it with a better grace than I do - tbh I use u75 to work off my frustration so you get my grumbling far more than most :o :D - but even so, it's just not true to say that everyone likes it. It hasn't got everything, and it does have very real downsides. Honestly, aside from the national archives, lots of conferences and suchlike and lots of live music, I'm not getting anything out of it that I didn't get from Hull - just a lot more expensively and with much more hassle, and I've not got access to some things I really do like. I'm not really trying to argue that on an objective level Hull's is better than London; just that liking one and disliking the other isn't completely absurd. IYSWIM. (eta) Anyway, we still shouldn't be having this argument... :o

Yeah, completely. My Mum and brother dislike London, so I can appreciate it isn't for everyone. In fact, one of my best mates loved living in Hull but dislikes London. In fact, I know many people that really dislike London, it's just when I read your posts I think "try to enjoy it, it's such a huge place, made up of so many different places that there'll be a bit you love" (as patronising as that sounds).

Right now, I wouldn't live in some bits of London if you paid me, but where I am now, and the surrounding areas I just fucking love.
