Where should I live? Need a safe place, within reach of euston/king's x

I live in East Finchley (edge of Highgate also) and the area there is safe and nice. I would recommend Highgate - East Finchley - Muswell Hill.

However in London you can never get 'economy' and 'safety' both on hand, let alone 'convenience'. Something has to be sacrificed for the other, in a sense.

Finsbury Park is fine round the Blackstock Rd/Arsenal area.

It has brilliant transport links, lots of restaurants and shops and now the police have cracked down on some gangs, it's much the same safety-wise as anywhere else.

Newington Green, Stoke Newington, I don't mind around Holloway, Arsenal, Highbury...agreed I feel better off around Finsbury Park than Camden.

Easy on the 'c' word, tiger! We had a thead last year by some kid about I'm going to UCL, where should I live, and money didn't seem an ojbect - he ended up living in Bloomsbury, IIRC, so not sure what the point of his thread was.

Would this be me?

I am 32, have worked all my adult life and poured my life's savings into my postgrad course in the hope of getting a better job. I moved to Finsbury Park, then Dalston.

The only reason I am even posting on this thread is that I am stunned that someone would remember one little thread from a year ago and still have a mental image of the poster, what kind of person he was and where he (supposedly) went to live!

People do like to judge without knowing the facts :D

Not necessary, it was not really personal. I am just amused that I am a part of a complete stranger's mental landscape based on said thread.

"some rich kid" .... fuck off cunt! ;) i happily say that cos i'm paying my own way to uni, with nothing from my parents. that, and i used to be a squatter

edited to say: the squats i was in were in rich parts of town (putney and barnes) - i've never squatted in hackney e9, for instance. so i half concede to your point :p

and you can't really go down the not posho route here either ... sotkie mutha fucker that's where it's at...

St. Albans is very very safe, it's a twenty minute train ride from the beautiful St. Pancras station. I have a friend renting there at the moment, apparently it's quite reasonable compared with central-ish London.

Worth a look, but remeber it is outside the zonal area so a season ticket wouldn't come cheap....

it's also dull as hell with bugger all to do and limited night time service for transport...

I think Finsbury Park/Blackstock Rd is ok in the summer. I walked from Finsbury Park to Highbury Barn the other night and it was ok though I was wary about who was around me and I do consider the area to be unsafe. I have spent time around there too in Winter and it takes on a different hue. I would not recommend it as a place to live for a Japanese woman. Also I think it would be quite a cultural shock, especially the dirt, food strewn in the gutters, and people spitting.

I have never really noticed this, I live just up the road and often go running around here a few times a week, often late at night (including in the winter) and I have never felt unsafe there, ever. Having said that I am a man and it is quite a 'male' dominiated area so perhaps that is more of a factor.

How do you think a little Japanese woman would see and fare in the area?

Anyway, backto house houses. With people suggestions, I've been checking gumtree for 4 bed houses we could get in places like Leyton, Walthamstow and GG.
Thanks folks. :D

Humm that wouldn't be much first choice of 'safe'

Anyway there are Japanese everywhere in London now instead of little groups of areas like there used to be. I don't think any Japanese that I know are finding it a huge problem moving from 'safe' Tokyo to 'unsafe' London. My wife has lived in London for about nine years now and never mentioned feeling unsafe (though she might not have known it I suppose).

Bugger the apology!

You said you "wanted to live within 30 mins walk of UCL" (ie West End and Camden only) and "money was no object within reason".

Put that in context - he said he was looking at house-shares and flat-shares. He also never said he decided to live in Bloomsbury, he just thanked the poster who recommended it for their suggestion.

Actual quote "Budget is not an issue within reason, I can afford to live with normal people doing normal jobs"

Hardly a rich kid, by any stretch .... I can understand a mature student being reluctant to share with 18 yr old undergraduates.
