Where shall I go in England, no more than 3 hours drive from London, in October?

How about Norwich. Never been there but it sounds OK.

It's very lovely actually - lots of nice coast and broads and whathaveyou if that's what you want; pretty good shopping and restaurants and that other stuff if that's the thing you want as well.

Aldeburgh's nice as well, although it can be a bit more pricey. So's Southwold fwiw - both ickle towns, long coastlines, big skies.

I like this idea - nice one

Isn't Canterbury a squaddie town though?

There's a barracks. I grew up in Canterbury and never met a soldier. Lots of students and tourists.

Dungeness is a good day out. Drive to Hythe and get the RHD Light Railway down to Dungeness.

A woman I used to work with always went on about Colchester. It does sound interesting in that it has lots of Roman stuff, but then it's a squaddie town too :(

I like Chester. Good pubs, good restaurants, lots of character. But more than three hours from London, I fear.

Nope. 2 hours 30 ish Euston Chester.

£66.40 off peak.

Cheaper if you book in advance.

Nice drive if you have 4 hours including a break for a wee and a coffee. Don't mix 'em up. Mind, at most service stations on the motorway, you might prefer to.

And I agree with you Beanburger, Chester is mostly very nice. Briefly the Capital of England too. It has distinction, Roman walls and mediaeval splendour.

Unlike some 'cities' further North, whose only claim to fame is unpopular heavy cakes.

Cardiff is a wicked city - lots to do and see - busy break

I also second ludow - really nice and the countryside around it is wonderful but this would be a more chilled out type of break

Norfolk coast?

Bath worth a visit, but I would say that. Perhaps wait a few months until the current bombsite downtown is finished though.

Another vote for Norwich.

Great shopping, medieval town centre, castle, cathedral, loads of arts things like jazz festivals, a river, North Norfolk coast with wild seals is nearby, Norfolk broads is a lovely day out on the river mooring up at a pub for lunch.

And its 1hr 50 on the train from Liverpool St, and under 20 quid if you book using thetrainline.com in advance

I would definitely consider Bath/Bristol or Cardiff, all have many lovely things about them. Cardiff has a fucking wicked free museum and is just generally a lovely place to explore and wander around, especially if you work out a few cool place in advance (that veggie restaurant, chapter cinema, clwb etc :D)

Not sure how long it'd take to drive to Cardiff though, but 3 hours is possible? Less on the train fo shizzle.

Never been to Norwich but a mate lived there for a bit and always bigged it up. Very green and... explorable. Bit like Swindon.... ok i'm just kidding on that one! AVOID! :D

That's more than three hours, innit? Nice town, if a little quiet.

In a good car it is less than 3hrs at the right time of day such as early Saturday morning. On a Friday evening, it is maybe 4hrs or more. The train is pretty hopeless.

Chipping Norton or Moreton in Marsh are closer and both are nice.

Rye is very nice and I have checked out some nice places in the Welsh Marches recently... bit far for one night though.

Why not just randomly bimble on the A and B roads until you see somewhere you fancy? UK is full of lovely villages. Most have a decent pub or two and most do rooms.

Just a thought.
Rye's not far, less than 2 hours from Filter's place. It's a lovely old town, and also close to Romney Marshes and Dungeness.
