Where do you live? Would you recommend it?

Not for donkey's years...but yep nice area from memory. And LOL, I know what you mean about the air seeming fresher! :D

Funny, I'd say the exact same thing about South London. I find North London grim and congested. I lived there for a few years and always felt very envious of the South. Couldn't wait to move down. I think it's an attitude thing.

Pinner for that edgy London vibe ....(joke)

if not Kensal Green - then Queens Park , even Harlesden (seriousely) - though Stroud Green etc comes highly reccomended by those who live there.

(I should really consult my "where to live in London book of 1966 if I could find it) :D Great reading .......

I concur! South London just seems a bit greener and nicer. Tbh, I'll probably wind up just moving back closer towards Brockwell Park again I reckon  :D

Just be nice to be closer to my bestest mate rather than travelling for 1.5 hrs to see her...

Just had a quick google, and I think I've been confusing South Norwood with Thornton Heath. I use a recording studio opposite the Crystal Palace football ground, and get the 250 from Brixton and get off at the clock tower. I always thought that was Thornton Heath - but is that South Norwood?

Streatham Hill (just by the bus garage) and I love it. Very handy for Brixton, really good transport connections (dozens of buses, an overland station etc), it's fairly quiet and leafy, not super-expensive

Depends what you're after.

If you want to live in a relatively quiet and cosmopolitan area, full of South Indian restaurants, a nice common and near central London (25 mins from Waterloo on Northern Line) then you might like Tooting.

I love it here :)

* a bit difficult to get to Russel Square by bus though

Yes it is, exciting South Norwood! It's ok. 11 mins on the train to London Bridge, trains to Clapham Junction and Victoria (but a bit slow). 4 mins to East Croydon though, for fast trains all over. Buses to Herne Hill, Brixton, Peckham, Crystal Palace.

It's one of the cheapest places to buy in London, hence why we moved here, but we both love it. It's friendly, nice community feel, unpretentious. Nothing remarkable in any way, but it serves our needs well, and we can get everywhere we need to without changing trains or buses.

As I said, it's dirt cheap. We had a £200k budget, and where we were living in Tulse Hill / Dulwich, we could only afford some quite run down ex-council flats that were very unloved and had massive service charges. In South Norwood, for £194k before the crash, we've got a groundfloor Victorian maisonette with original wood floors, fireplaces, two bedroom, french windows out into a nice garden, a study, big eat in kitchen and a nice big lounge.

For me, well worth the slightly mundane location.

Am contemplating Streatham El Jefe, but it doesn't really eliminate the 1.5 hr journey time to see Kitten out of Twisted Kitten :( My money would certainly go further in Streatham and I kinda know the area.

Am torn between trying something/somewhere new and sticking to where I know, and know I love. Aggh! Still, I've timetabled something ridiculous like a week between the end of my exams and when I've told shitforbranes I'll move out, to find a place and pack, so I'm sure it'll all be fine! :D

there are overlands from Streatham station that get you into the city / north london pretty quickly i think - thameslink and the like

No it's not! It is Thornton Heath you go to Ian. The 250 doesn't go to South Norwood. But they are quite close to each other, and both have clock towers.

Aha. Didn't know Thornton Heath had a clock tower, and didn't know it was close to Selhurst Park.

Thornton Heath deserves it's rough reputation apparently. Wouldn't know, never been. The DJ Skream is from there, and Plastician.

They do both have clock towers but doesn't he go to Selhurst?

Crystal Palace FC is in Selhurst, and Selhurst lays between Thornton Heath and South Norwood – Estate Agents selling property in Selhurst might say it’s either in Thornton Heath or South Norwood depending on how the market is. And there is legit overlap. But Selhurst is where CPFC is.

Much of the above is also SE25, of course. And LB Croydon. Hope that's clearer . . .

I agree with chris, palace is a wonderful area, very underrated, it's very cheap for london; you can get 2 bedders there for 120 130k!

And the view from the old building is one of the world's most wonderful city-views, up there with florence IMVHO

Is that Crystal Palace Crystal Palace or Thornton Heath Crystal Palace . . . .

Mr Dog - Which old building, btw - somewhere at the top of Gipsy Hill?

I live in Barcelona and yes, would recommend it.
Before that I lived in Muswell Hill, North London and loved living there too. If/when I return to London I would definitely look to move back there. :)

Just checked on a map and it is Thornton Heath I go to.

So South Norwood appears to be a little to the east of TH. What's your local train station then Chris? Norwood Junction?

Yep. Very handy station, trains go direct and fast to London Bridge and vice versa. There's a stopping service as well, mind.

the LB service is good, but the service to Vic is dire! every half hour, stopping every blinkin' where on the way. quicker to go away from london to E. Croydon and change there imo
